Two picks in Ireland and Newbury for Wednesday
It's a case of keeping things simple today with the opening selection, as Mapmaker runs in the Amo silks and unsurprisingly heads the market for the 14:00 fillies' Maiden at 11/43.75. She had drifted this morning from 5/23.50, and anything near 3/14.00 for these Amo horses is acceptable early on.
We saw again yesterday how the Amo youngsters are forward; with Packard proving too good after the benefit of a run, and Mapmaker showed ability at Redcar just a week ago.
With 3f to go she was in a good position on the heels of the leaders but suddenly found herself short of room, not once but twice as the winner Onigirl got the cleaner path.
She travelled well and was easy to spot with her red fluffy noseband and for Newbury standards, this looks a race a bit short of real quality - on paper anyway.
Her trainer Darryll Holland has only sent out a couple of juvenile runners thus far in 2023 but there was plenty to work with from Redcar on quick ground to put her in the frame.
It goes without saying in these silks, her pedigree is precocious with speed and she holds plenty of entries in the upcoming sales races.
Ryan Moore is in action at the Curragh this evening and there's some excellent racing to look forward to, and the grandly-named All Time Great looks an obvious one to improve for the switch to a better racing surface.
She made her debut over 1m2f at Leopardstown in a race where Aidan O'Brien had the first and second in Savethelastdance and Boogie Woogie.
Savethelastdance finished second in last week's Oaks, yet went off 20/1 at Leopardstown and All Time Great was shorter in the betting at 7s.
Boogie Woogie has since won, and so has the third from Leopardstown in easy fashion, and All Time Great looks ready made for the step up from 1m2f to 1m4f this evening and we should see a much better filly.
The selection has had a 63 day break, maybe to keep her way from that softer ground and it goes without saying that Moore and O'Brien are a real force here with Moore 7-14 at 50% at the Curragh this term and the trainer at 37%.
All Time Great also has entries in the Ribblesdale and Irish Oaks, plus the Munster Oaks in two weeks.
