Backing a Philip Hobbs' chaser over fences is sometimes akin to playing with fire, as I found out last week. However, we don't have to worry about the fences for Hobbs for the opening selection as Royal Jewel goes handicapping for the opening 13:40 Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle.
He ran a fair race last time against quite a big improver in the shape of Storming Nelson - plus he didn't help himself by racing too keen in the heavy conditions.
The ground is better for Wednesday and the step up 2f will suit him too judged on his previous win at the track, so he'll have a better chance of lasting home.
For his Maiden Hurdle win he made the running and settled better, and while Elizabeth Gale (who can claim 8lb) is inexperienced in terms of winners, I'll take a chance on the mark being a good one.
One of the most interesting runners on the card is smuggled away at the end over 2m7f and that's Ben Pauling's handicap debutant Hercules Morse.
Rider Kielan Woods was very complimentary about him after winning at Ffos Las last season in January - a race where he still looked very green but still put the race to bed to win by 2L against Uncle Bert - who has since ran about a million times and rated in the mid 120s.
The time off doesn't worry me when backing one from Ben Pauling's team and he's a fine looking horse that might have needed the time to mature.
For a handicap debut, the 119 could seriously underplay him and he should have no trouble with the trip judged on his Ffos Las win.
Pauling remains in form too with 5-19 at 26% in the last two weeks.
