Alan Dudman picks two runners in the Extra Place Specials for 180/1 each-way double
Keep Johnston onside with Spring Mile selection
Back The Gatekeeper @ 17/2 in the 14:25 at Doncaster
The return of the Flat at Doncaster greets us for Saturday, although the testing conditions sets up a difficult day. Especially those juveniles in the Brocklesby - it could come as quite a shock.
We'll tackle two of the big handicaps this afternoon and utilise the Extra Place Specials, as fields could be thinned out if the soft turns to heavy - and it's highly likely to do so. Some of the races could resemble Takeshi's Castle.
The Gatekeeper goes for Charlie Johnston in the Spring Mile, and while the bounce theory is hovering over his head following a winning return at Newcastle recently, I am prepared to throw the Johnston dice with this one.
He beat Starshiba comfortably at Newcastle by over 2L, and it was his first appearance for 625 days.
The 4yo fractured a leg in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in the summer of 2021, so just to get him back in once piece was a feat in itself.
Highly tried as a juvenile, he acted on soft it seemed too, and up to 90 and the look of a horse who'll get a 1m, we'll go with the five places.
No laughing matter with Boardman
Back Boardman @ 18/1 in the 15:25 at Doncaster
Both of my selections are drawn in 19 today, so if it turns out to be the wrong part of the track, I'm stuffed.
Boardman is a horse who I've always had plenty of time for and he often has met trouble in-running.
That was very much the case in the Lincoln Trial last time at Wolverhampton, and I'd backed him at a big price for that too.
He was held up and was going well before checked in the closing stages, but Wolverhampton is a world away from the vast expanses of Town Moor.
The Tim Easterby 7yo held his own in some big handicaps last term over 7f and 1m, and in his younger days he bolted up by nearly 5L in heavy ground at Haydock - and when it's heavy at Haydock, it's heavy.
Boardman usually comes on for the run too as he has winning form on his second appearance of the season twice. At the start of the week he was 33/1, so a few people agree with me too now he's 18s.
