Nottingham - 17:00 - Back Manxman

It's not often you see a 200,000-guinea half-brother to a Group 1 winner start off life in handicaps from a mark of 46, but that's exactly what happened when Manxman got off the mark at Windsor early last month.

A rather lazy individual, Simon & Ed Crisford's charge is somewhat less blessed in the application/ability department than his esteemed half-sibling Dubai Honour, and he took plenty of rousting from a 10lb higher mark last time at Wolverhampton, finishing a rather laboured third.

However, he could be galvanised by the application of a first-time visor in this ordinary handicap and the step up to 2m for the first time should showcase his stamina. He's also by Cracksman, who relished soft ground, so conditions could well play to his strengths.

Rab Havlin may well have to work hard to enable Manxman to get the job done, but his current mark of 56 looks more than workable against exposed opposition.

Newcastle - 17:32 - Back Eloped

Jamie Spencer has some good rides at Newcastle on Thursday evening and he can get his night off to the perfect start by winning on Hugo Palmer's filly Eloped.

A nicely-bred daughter of Golden Horn, she posted by far her best effort from three starts in maiden company when finishing second at Chelmsford last time, form that was franked by the subsequent win of fourth-place finisher Oh So Grand.

It's also worth noting that a couple of those further back also showed improved efforts to finish second on their next starts, so the form has a really solid feel to.

Eloped's pedigree also looks tilted towards stamina, so I'd expect her to improve stepping up a couple of furlongs to 1m 4f here.

In a similar vein to Manxman, she's an unexposed filly against some who the handicapper knows plenty about, and her opening mark of 62 looks more than fair.
