With plenty of rain forecast throughout the day, conditions could be very testing by the time the final race at Redcar is run, but that shouldn't inconvenience War Defender, whose most recent effort was a seasonal best when third on soft ground at Doncaster.
This is an amateur riders' event confined to jockeys with no more than three wins to their name at the start of the season, so we're dealing largely with an inexperienced bunch, so it's a plus point that War Defender's partner Thomas Easterby is one of the most competent in the field.
His mount is also the only confirmed front runner in the race, so there's every chance he can get a solo on the lead if his jockey can get the fractions right.
Everything looks set for a big run from this 6-y-o gelding.
Bernadine has been in fine form this year, notching a pair of wins on the all-weather in the early part pf the season, before earning a break following the second of them.
She returned when down the field at Leicester in May, shaping as if the run would do her good but wasted no time getting back to form when striking in convincing fashion at Nottingham the following month.
James Fanshawe's filly was upped markedly in grade on her most recent outing, jumping from 0-70 company into a 0-90 at Ascot, but responded with a career-best effort to finish runner-up in that 11-runner affair.
The form has subsequently been boosted by the win of also-ran Farhh To Shy in a Racing League contest at Yarmouth last week and this handicap represents a drop back down in grade for Bernadine.
A repeat of that Ascot run will make the selection very tough to beat.
