Trainer Charlie Appleby has some strong runners at Newmarket for the start of the July meeting

Newmarket - 13:50 - Back Castle Way

Newmarket's July meeting starts off our double quest today, and indeed searching for a single winner as formwise, I am more L'es Fremantle at the moment.

The watering at HQ on the July course in the build up this week will keep us away from genuine fast ground, which is becoming as rare as an orchid in winter these days.

Good ground should be the order of the day, and good ground will suit Charlie Appleby's Castle Way - an improving 3yo who goes up in trip.

Priced at 6/17.00, it's a real tempter, but the new trip is quite a jump from 1m2f to 1m5f for this, and the price also factors in Aidan O'Brien and Saint George - with the latter running a fine race in the Queen's Vase.

Castle Way landed a future stayers Maiden at Newmarket last term as a 2yo and was indeed mentioned as a potential Queen's Vase type by his trainer and the manner of the win was impressive as One Nation, another Appleby horse, was nearly 5L back in third is now rated 100.

His only start this term was at Newmarket's May meeting - winning easily at Listed level to earn himself a rating of 106.

Expect him to be ridden handy, and I expect him to stay well. He does hold an entry in the Great Voltigeur next month, and this could have been Godolphin's Derby horse at one stage, although he hated Epsom on his one start there, and as a thoroughly big unit, in fact loathed it.

Doncaster - 15:45 - Back Mr Wonderful

A couple of good horses can be found on the honours board for this Doncaster Maiden - including James Garfield in recent times, and Mr Wonderful can live up to his rather grand moniker at 15:45 on Town Moor.

The Amo Racing 2yo has some entries that take the eye with two in big sales' races in August and October, but also the Gimcrack next month.

One thing's for sure, the Amo horses are bought to perform as juveniles rather than the slow and steady approach. It's certainly more hare than tortoise and Richard Hannon is 13-95 at 14% with his 2yos this season, although it's slightly lower at Donny towards 12%.

However, Mr Wonderful is bred to be a 2yo, as the dam Wanting won her first two career starts and was a sister to a 2yo winner.

Opting to take in Doncaster rather than the likes of Newbury and Newmarket, where there'd be plenty of options for a 6f race, I like the fact he's drifted from 5/23.50 to 9/25.50.

Back Mr Wonderful @ 9/25.50
