- Air Raid should relish today's testing goin
- Morrison out to land the staying prize again
- Al Dudman is backing a 33/1 Sportsbook double at Haydock on Friday
Soft ground to suit O'Keeffe's raider
Back Air Raid @ 8.07/1 in the 14:50 at Haydock
A super effort from Magnetic North who finished second for the column yesterday at a massive BSP of 34.0. The second leg wasn't so good, but backing handicappers from the Ado McGuinness' yard remains right up there with one of my favoured punting angles.
The dying embers of the Flat season flicker at Haydock today and two bets are on the list for the afternoon in the deep ground starting with Jedd O'Keeffe's Air Raid.
His dance card was somewhat ruined for the season last time out at York with a heavy defeat, but I am quick to forgive any defeat on the Knavesmire, plus it was a hot race and he's down in class from top weight today - a tactic I often lean towards.
The 7yo has been spared a tough campaign with just three starts and the York race came after a break, so I expect him to show a lot better today. He has course form too with a cracking effort in a 0-105 over CD last term.
Soft ground suits and he's a front-runner too. With the first-time tongue-tie, and he looks a good price for a bet at 13/2 on the Sportsbook in one of the Extra Place Specials.
The trainer is 2-7 at Haydock this term with a healthy profit margin of +48.33.
Morrison's Whitehaven out to land successive staying prizes
Back Whitehaven @ 4.3100/30 in the 17:08 at Haydock
Testing ground and 2m at Haydock should give a run for our money with Whitehaven, who will certainly have his conditions with the heavy in store in the north west.
Hughie Morrison's stayer took this particular crown in 2021 winning the race by over 4L when strong in the betting and fully justified the price with an emphatic performance. The ground was on the extreme side, but he devoured the wet conditions and was strong in the finish to record 12.02 and 12.93 second sectionals 3f and 2f from home.
He looked progressive as a 3yo, and he get can get back on track after an underwhelming 2022 - a year he's had just three starts. He ran in a decent handicap at York last time, but was taken on for the lead and the exertions cost him as he was defeated 11L.
Best when making the running, Whitehaven is probably one for a back-to-lay too.
