Davis could be the nugget on the opening day at Prestbury Park

Back Clay Rogers each-way @ 10.09/1 in the 13:35 at Cheltenham

Another agonising one-two for yesterday's column as No Cruise Yet was denied a short head in the finish, and those small margins when slightly out of form always seem to count against you. The rooster of displeasure was most definitely crowing.

We're playing a bit bigger today in terms of price, and the first mention of Cheltenham aired in these parts for some while, and all the right faces are back.

The opening 13:35 Conditional Jockeys' race is one of the Extra Place Specials for the day, and I am going each-way on an Olly Murphy runner and the promising Daire Davis - although promising is often inserted into any conditional's preface, much like any apprentice has a useful claim.

Clay Rogers has found improvement since the cheekpieces were fitted, and subsequently landed a pair of Uttoxeter 2m4f good ground handicap hurdles. However, those wins were back in 2021 and he's been on the missing list since, so the downside is the 415-day absence, which is a slight worry for a horse who has had some issues with breathing.

However, it might work the other way, and his manner in winning at Uttoxeter labels him as a galloper, and dropping down to 2m at Cheltenham and a style of running that should see him race prominently should gives us a run for our money and a shot it hitting the first five.

Davis won with his first ever ride in Britain last term, and his 10lb claim off a low weight looks, err useful.

Pretender can bounce back for Lee after Roscommon flop

Back Sole Pretender each-way @ 10.09/1 in the 14:10 at Cheltenham

A novice chase with more than two runners these days is as rare as a butterfly in January, but eight runners for a good-quality 14:10 at least throws up the each-way option for the second leg.

Sole Pretender is a horse I have plenty of time for, as he has a real likeable style. He was a 150-rated hurdler and won The Grimes Hurdle in 2021, but hasn't quite hit top form over fences with two wins from four starts.

A real blip came in the Galway Festival and he was well beaten at Roscommon last time - albeit behind a classy winner. He reportedly bled afterwards most latterly, so at least we have a valid excuse.

And while his rivals have quite a bit of potential, his front-running style gives him the air of someone heading to the office with a backlog of work - just like he did at Ballinrobe earlier this year as he really attacked those fences.

Good ground or yielding looks about right for him, and Norman Lee's stable star does look a little overpriced to me considering how smart he was over hurdles. Going from the front and with his price at nearly double figures, he could be a nice back-to-lay trade too.
