Daily Racing Multiple: Varian and Gosden the Saturday double for in-form tipster

Newmarket
Alan is heading to Newmarket and Newbury for a Saturday 38/1 each-way double

Courage Mon Ami's 5/1 win yesterday was Alan Dudman's 20th single winner in the last 19 days, and he is hoping to add another in Saturday's 38/1 double...

Planet can be out of this world for Varian

Back Exoplanet @ 6.05/1 in the 13:10 at Newbury

A somewhat frustrating day on the multiple front, as once again a decent winner at 5/1 with Courage Mon Ami came on the heels of Alnilam's third. A fair run for the latter, an absolutely blistering effort from the former to pull away hard held by 5L ensured a 20th single winner for the Daily Racing Multiple column in 19 days.

Courage Mon Ami had also drifted to 13/2 at one point.

Saturday's opening selection is another newcomer and the 13:10 Novice Stakes has been won by a couple of subsequent smart types in recent seasons. Roger Varian landed this in 2020 with Dubai Poet, and I am with the Newmarket man again with Exoplanet. Dubai Poet made his debut in this, but empathically won on his second start at Newbury by 5L and is rated 109.

Exoplanet is a 2yo by Sea The Stars, and sire stats were key to yesterday's duo, and once again the numbers provide the betting angle as the sire has a 17% win record at Newbury over all distances, but he's a massive 6-20 at 30% over today's trip of 7f. For 2yo's over that distance, he is even better with a 4-21 (33%) win record and 7-12 (58%) placed rate.

While the Derby entry means very little at this stage, there's a good indication of stamina down the line as his dam is related to Fame And Glory.

Varian has a fair enough win record with juveniles at Newbury with 12 winners at 14%. He's just about an each-way price at 5/1.

Natasha to benefit returning to 1m

Back Natasha @ 6.511/2 in the 14:06 at Newmarket

It's been a disappointing season so far for John Gosden's Natasha considering the amount of promise she had displayed last year as 2yo, but I am backing her to get back on track at a fair price for the 0-95 Fillies' Handicap at Newmarket over 1m.

She had looked most progressive winning twice as a novice at Kempton and Sandown, but the dice didn't fall kindly for Gosden as he pitched her into the Group 1 Marcel Boussac at the end of the season.

A belated July comeback at Newmarket looked a fitness run to get her back, but she ran poorly at Goodwood last time over 1m2f.

The drop to 1m should work well today as she was too keen at Goodwood, maybe a headstrong Frankel? But she looked potentially pattern class at Kempton last term with the way she travelled, and with her sights lowered today, I expect a better run.

Again, at 11/2, she'd be an each-way possible with the eight runners if you are playing that way as the trainer has a 40% strike-rate for horses placed over 1m at Newmarket.
