Thomson out to extend 50% strike-rate at Musselbrugh
Back Doyen Breed @ 8.07/1 in the 14:03 at Musselburgh
Doyen Star was a most impressive winner for Evan Williams yesterday and for the first leg the column on Friday - returning a BSP of 8.00. His bumper horse and second selection for the multiple hit 1.558/15 in-running before falling on the flat about 200 yards from the line when in second. Hopefully the horse is okay and none the worse for wear, but a couple of days that has seen the column hit the first winner at nice prices - only for the second leg to get done at a short price.
Two unseats (one at the last) and a faller in a bumper can be considered quite unlucky. A pair of 47/1 doubles with both second legs hitting twos-on.
Saturday is a crackerjack of a day in terms of the racing with four Grade 1s to open up the Dublin Racing Festival, but regular readers will know I like a good staying chase and Hexham form - and with Doyen Breed we've got two boxes ticked. And he's another Doyen - so that's three.
Sandy Thomson's 8yo is lightly-raced in the chasing world with just five starts, and his return and first run of the season at Doncaster over hurdles following a break of 271 days had all the makings of a prep run to tee up a return to the larger obstacles. He also took quite a heavy fall on his final start of last season at Ayr's Scottish Grand National meeting in the Grade 2, so it looks a case of building the horse's confidence back up again.
Doyen Breed competed in a some good races as a novice last term in graded company, and in his second season it's a real positive move from Thomson to send him up in distance to this marathon trip. He looked a real thorough stayer when wining over Ayr's 3m1f in a hurdle race back in 2021.
His jumping overall is sound despite his fall last spring. His trainer Thomson is a master at these staying races and won this in 2018 with Full Jack, and few can match his record at the track this at Musselburgh with a 5-10 record at 50%. Thomson will no doubt be keeping an eye on the Six Nations Rugby as a former Scottish youth international.
Didero to chime in with a win - at last
Back Didero Vallis @ 4.03/1 in the 16:20 at Musselburgh
Another staying chase for the second selection - and another second or beaten horse at 1/2 in-running will not be welcome. Didero Vallis is the one, and he is in Veteran chase company today and looks a bit of a standout for Venetia Williams.
He was third in last season's Kim Muir - and to use a great racing phrase "he ran off his face" on that occasion. It was even more meritorious considering he made an early blunder.
This term his mark has slipped 4lbs, and on old form he's well treated, although I realise mentioning form of three years ago for a Veterans' race is a pointless task. But he is well treated!
A small field could be just what he wants as he likes to be up with the pace, and Williams is using Ned Fox who can claim 6lb.
Williams is a rare visitor to Musselburgh and has sent out just one runner here in five seasons - and it won.
