Could it be a cakewalk for the Battenberg colours?
Back Kath's Toyboy @ 8.07/1 in the 18:50 at Southwell
Close to a winning double yesterday with a win and a second, and an unlucky runner-up pick at that, as Echo Watt maybe didn't quite have his soft ground, and caught some of the trouble in an incident-packed race. He traded at 2.8615/8 in-play and he deserves another chance for the future.
Ten runners line up for the 18:50 6f Handicap at Southwell, and Kath's Toyboy is an attractive enough price for an each-way punt here, in what looks a fairly open contest, and not too bad at that for 0-70 class.
The selection doesn't possess the most dazzling of records on the All-Weather with just one victory from 19 starts, but he has placed in 10 of those, finishing second on no less than eight occasions. And I don't need anymore seconds for the column thank you!
Kath's Toyboy raced at Lingfield last time and was down the field, but only beaten about a length-and-a-half . However, it doesn't really tell the full story as the grey found himself on the inside with a good pitch, but was switched out wide heading into the loop for home and was pushed even wider.
Doing that at a tight circuit such as Lingfield is far from ideal, and it was a first ride for Chloe Lyons - and her inexperienced badly showed, as she couldn't lug in and caused a bit of interference in attempting to do so.
He was still travelling well, and probably better than anything else out wide, and the 4yo looks well treated from 64.
His two previous effort prior to the Lingfield horror show were solid. He finished second under an apprentice at Wolverhampton off a fast pace - perhaps going too soon, and also was a winner at Newcastle and the time and sectionals represented a good even pace. The fact he has winning form at a stiff track bodes well for Southwell.
However, the big swing here is Kevin Stott taking over. He is very much a man in demand at the moment and already has clocked up 79 rides in the last month. His 14 winners shows he means business for the jockeys' winter title, and he is 7-41 at the track this year.
Kath's Toyboy actually ran on the old Fibresand surface here, and a much-missed surface at that. His one effort on the new terrain resulted in a second, so we have no qualms in handling the place.
Khabib to give Craggs a big win
Back Khabib @ 5.59/2 in the 19:20 at Southwell
Consistency is a precious commodity in these winter handicaps, and Khabib rates a worthy contender for a decent-looking 0-90 5f race - a rare treat in December.
Top weight Alligator Alley is rated 92, so it's a fair race, but Khabib ran a cracker over CD last month behind Les Eyre's Bedford Flyer, and that is a strong piece of form for the track, as Lord Riddiford was well beaten behind Khabib, and he's rated 96.
The time was also the quickest on the card out of the four 5f heats, and the selection ran a seriously fast 10.43 early sectional. Perhaps he was too fast early, as the finishing speed and closing sectionals at 99% and 12.00 seconds suggested so.
He won over CD in September in good style, once again showing some fair pace early in the race. He would have loved the old surface with his fleet of foot style, and his trainer Ray Craggs wouldn't have too many horses rated in the mid-80s, but he's been a fine servant for the yard and is looking for his fifth win on the All-Weather this evening.
His price gives us a 43/1 double on the Sportsbook.
