Smith chaser can boss this from the front

Back Kaphumor 8.515/2 in the 12:50 at Wetherby

What seems like an eternity, there's finally a jumps' selection for the column today and Wetherby's opener is a good old fashioned soft ground 3m chase, and I'm with a good fashioned trainer of staying chasers with Sue Smith's Kaphumor.

The 15/2 price certainly appeals for an each-way dart with the 10 runners and Kaphumor still has a bit of potential with only eight runs over fences.

The 7yo possesses some Hexham staying form, and those form lines for these low-grade races are invaluable in terms of ability to stay and jump.

Today's jockey Thomas Willmott rode him to a 7L victory that day in a race where he bossed it from the front and put in a decent round of jumping.

He followed up with a long-distance runner-up spot over Sedgefield's taxing 3m3f soon afterwards and was a little unlucky as he was pestered for lead.

He's only had one outing this season and that was back in November when finishing fourth at Wetherby over CD, but the good ground was against him, as was the nature of the race that wasn't a true test of stamina.

Considering it was his first start for 230 days, he should be able to build on that.

With soft ground, and fitness back and a drop of 2lb to 96 we should see a better Kaphumor this afternoon.

Smith is 3-22 at Wetherby this season, and there's every chance this front-runner could have an easy lead.

Four-timer beckons for in-form Alafdhal

Back Alafdhal @ 3.259/4 in the 15:20 at Southwell

Some decent action on the Southwell card this afternoon and the 0-105 looks a good race with favourite Tiger Crusade looking to follow up a recent win, but it looks a hot race and a similar price at around 9/4 is available (or was this morning) on Alafdhal - a horse who carries a penalty today for an easy win last time.

Indeed, Alafdhal was part of a 10/1 winning double for the column just five days ago and was such a decisive winner that he's ready to go into some deeper races after today.

Kevin Stott rode him again and was part of his four-timer before the fog hit the meeting.

He has a fair bit of natural speed and is able to lie up with the pace quite comfortably, and his injection of speed with an 11.62 sectional 2f from him at Wolverhampton last time saw him skip away with ease to record a 2L win.

He'd previously recorded three wins on the spin at Chelmsford from 52, 57 and 60, but he's a superior horse to that rating and is so smooth I would be staggered if he cannot go on to compete in some 0-85s.

His sire Lope De Vega has a 10% win record at Southwell, but it's higher for his placed runners and Stott is 15-86 from the last month from all of his rides. He's been busy.
