Alan Dudman picks out a 21/1 Sportsbook double for Wednesday across Lingfield and Kempton
Consistent Mick's Spirit can give Conrad another winner
Back Mick's Spirit @ 4.03/1 in the 14:45 at Lingfield
Tiger Crusade delivered in emphatic fashion yesterday for the column with a fairly comfortable win in the Southwell feature last night, and he returned a wonderful drifting BSP of 14.74.
He'd been drifting all day and had started the morning at 9/2, so never be put off by a slider in the betting. Bird For Life got third for the each-way part of the 71/1 double, and who knows what could have happened had she not missed the break, but she ran well and you have to admire her toughness from 67 starts, nine wins, and 24 placed runs.
No such each-way angles for Wednesday as we simply don't have enough runners, and the action has been decimated by the wet weather. Lingfield is the first stop and Mick's Spirit is reliable enough to keep onside for the 5f Handicap at 3/1.
The 5yo rarely runs a bad race and goes ever so well at Lingfield, and I have had my eye on him for his next start after losing out to Harb last time at Lingfield.
Those with good memories will note Harb for Peter Crate, as I had tipped him that day and he won easily making all and was very well handicapped, so that's a fair effort in the context of today's race and Harb certainly had an advantage as the early tempo was steady and was better positioned.
Mick's Spirit put up a 10.56 sectional in the mid part of the race, and he can lead too - as shown when winning over CD in the summer. That was 0-75 grade, and this is easier and has the beating of Kim Wexler.
His trainer Conrad Allen has had two recent winners from five runners at 40%.
A Godolphin one-two? But let's oppose the favourite
Back Glittering Lights @ 4.7515/4 in the 19:30 at Kempton
A second selection wasn't the easiest to dig out, and having two Godolphin horses in the same race puts an interesting slant on the penultimate contest of the evening.
Charlie Appleby has the top two in the betting, rather unsurprisingly, with Elegant Charm at Evens and Glittering Prize at 15/4, and I am never deterred from backing his weaker one in the betting, especially as this is far from a good race.
Glittering Lights made her debut at Yarmouth at the back-end of the turf season with a third behind a John Gosden newcomer, and while that form hasn't been tested with the winner and second, it looked a fair race and she showed a lot of promise.
Therefore going without a win with her following two starts has been disappointing on the face of it. However, her run at Kempton over 1m in November is a good piece of form.
Another John Gosden winner and well bred daughter of Journey hacked up and is well above average, and Glittering Prize can rate unlucky in terms of losing second as she tried to make a race of it with Inner Space and the exertions cost her.
The time was a good one and my first impression was that she might not have stayed the 1m trip.
She's back in distance and trying sprinting for the first time tonight, and I can see the 6f suiting her - especially with a better draw than her stablemate as she has made the running. She ran at Wolverhampton last time but was drawn poorly over 7f.
A mark of 75 for her pedigree means she could be let in lightly here, and with two AW winners in her family (including the very smart Marching Army), she could be better on this sort of surface and Jamie Spencer rides.
Indeed, her sire Kingman has a 16% win rate at Kempton.
