Nestor Park is one of the contenders today for the big race at Warwick

Alan is tackling the Classic Chase at Warwick today and sticks with a red-hot trainer for a Wetherby bumper for his 54/1 each-way Sportsbook double...

  • Ben Pauling's Nestor Park ran well on Haydock return

  • Sandy Thomson operating at a 56% strike-rate

  • Alan Dudman is using the Extra Place Special race at Warwick as the first leg for his 54/1 double

Pauling set for a Classic day with Nestor

Back Nestor Park each-way @ 11.010/1 in the 15:00 at Warwick

The Ben Pauling-angle didn't quite work out yesterday with Clapton Hill finishing pulled up having stopped quickly in the closing stages so hopefully all is well with him, but it's Pauling again for the Warwick Classic Chase with Nestor Park, and he's worth a shot at today's extreme distance. He won't mind the soft conditions either.

The 10yo has been consistent in his chasing to date from 12 starts, and while early in his career he was a horse could find a little less than expected in a finish, he hasn't done an awful lot wrong in his last few starts.

Today's Warwick fences take a bit of jumping as they are stiff, just as stiff as Newbury and he won there last season as a novice when making all for a tidy win. That was over slightly shorter at 2m7f, but Pauling sent him over 3m5f at Haydock last time for his seasonal return, and bar a less than fluent round, he saw out the distance well despite his break.

Another 3m5f awaits and he's unexposed at that short of trip, and I think he will stay. As a front-runner too, he should be able to get into his rhythm up front and a good run today might open a few doors in terms of long distance chases.

I'm pleased to see Tony Calvin has put him up too as one of his bets today each-way, and with the Extra Place Special, he can hit the frame in clearly a strong race.

No stopping Sandy at the moment with red-hot run

Back March Wind @ 5.04/1 in the 15:42 at Wetherby

The 15:42 Wetherby Bumper to close the card is a race that has attracted one or two of the bigger yards - notably Dan Skelton with a Flat bred filly Sweet Or Dry. There's experience elsewhere in the field, although those with a run under their belts haven't impressed with times or form.

So I am happy to go down the route I can often do in a Bumper and go with a newcomer.

March Wind is by a sire (in particular a jumps' stallion) I am a huge fan of in Doyen, and not many Doyens are small.

There's a bag-load of stamina in her pedigree with Frantic Tan in there, and he was a winner over 3m4f. Her trainer Sandy Thomson is red-hot at the moment with five winners from his last nine runners at 56% while jockey Ryan Mania is 10-27 in the last month with a 37% strike-rate and a profit to level stakes of 9.00.

Thomson is also 1-6 with bumpers this term, and with ground being soft and testing all over the country, there are no fears with any son or daughter of Doyen handling the testing conditions. Irish Raptor is one of his relatives, and he liked the mud and a trip when trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies. He ran in Vic Venturi's National and then went Point-To-Pointing for a trainer called Jelly O'Brien.

With the test today in store, a few of the others might have legs of jelly.

Good luck on Saturday.
