Ok Pal can be our punting friend on Thursday
Back OK Pal @ 9.517/2 in the 17:30 at Chelmsford
With the weather claiming Warwick for Thursday, the outlook is rather bleak and at the time of writing, Newcastle was a meeting I was interested in, but we'll have to park that idea there so I am playing 'home' as the used to say in A Question of Sport with Chelmsford tonight.
Fourteen runners in a 2yo Nursery is never the easiest, but the Tony Carroll-trained Ok Pal showed more than enough on his latest outing (and fourth start) to suggest there's something to work with at a low grade.
He'd been sent off absolutely whopping prices on his first three runs with little evidence of talent, having gone off 200/1, 300/1 and 150/1. He ran quicker with some cash behind him last time at the track (at 14/1) for an honourable second behind the impressive winner Bedazzling; who subsequently wasn't beaten far in a slightly better race under a penalty. Bedazzling was down in grade substantially when beating Ok Pal, and the selection has been raised 1lb to 53. A 1lb rise!
The draw could be difficult in 12, but Ok Pal's effort last time was on the inside and the pace was out wide, and it wasn't a disadvantage to be out on the wing on that occasion. He stayed on over the 6f there, and the step to 7f is a positive as there's plenty of stamina in his pedigree plus a couple of juvenile winners.
There's a negative on the sire stats as his father Stimulation has had 45 runners at Chelmsford with just one winner, but has had a placed-rate of 22%, and he could be good enough in a poor race to at least hit second or third. He's certainly an each-way price.
Marwari can add to his collection of Southwell wins after a break
Back Marwari @ 9.517/2 in the 19:30 at Chelmsford
I cannot remember the last time I backed and tipped a Mick Easterby runner, but the veteran handler's 6yo Marwari is a big enough price to warrant an interest for the Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook with four places.
He's more of a Southwell horse, with three of his wins there, all in the summer off 46, 51 and 56 showing real battling qualities to scoop the prize on those three occasions. In fact, his stoic attitude is much better on the AW as he's 0-14 on turf.
Marwari was previously trained by Dermot Weld in Ireland, although admittedly didn't last long at Rosewell, but he did have a rating of 73 at one stage and has plenty of form in tonight's 0-60 grade.
He's had a break of 101 days and will be nicely freshened up for a winter campaign, and could give Mick a winner on a card he enjoyed a 2yo success on 12 months ago.
Again the draw is wide in 10, but last year's winner in this came from stall nine. He'd been backed a little too this morning 11s.
