Hodd to give us a helping hand on the way to a Dundalk double
Back Hodd's Girl @ 5.04/1 in the 20:00 at Dundalk
A third and an unseat yesterday, and it was a case of what could have been with Echo Watt, who travelled well at a decent price and was still in contention five from home before decanting his jockey.
Friday's focus is over at Dundalk for its regular spot, purely as the ground at the moment is making life tricky for the jumps. It could be genuinely good at Newbury for the start of their two-day Coral Gold Cup meeting, while Doncaster is usually a decent racing surface and at the moment it's hard to know what you are dealing with.
There are no such worries regarding the All-Weather surface for the Ado McGuinness-trained Hodd's Girl, who seems to have fallen in love with not only the switch to McGuinness, but also Dundalk, as her record is excellent with five wins from 15 starts and numerous places.
She ran in 0-100 class in October and clocked a reasonable time over 7f recently, and that trip probably stretches her a little. However, she made no mistake last time when dropped in class and trip to 6f to land her fifth course win with Adam Caffrey's 7lb replacing Ronan Whelan.
Her stamina for 6f could be a factor here as she does stay well for a sprinter, a fact shown when bolting up at Naas in August from 57. It's testament to her rapid improvement that she's now off 84 and might not be done with yet.
A drift in the betting would be nice, and she drifted when scoring at the track in August. I don't mind that all from runners from her yard, and her draw in nine could work out to be a good one.
Keane on Lunar to show some power tonight
Back Lunar Power @ 9.08/1 in the 20:30 at Dundalk
A decent staying handicap over 2m rounds off the Dundalk card on Friday night, and it's far from easy either with 14 runners but there is the Extra Place Special to utilise on the Sportsbook for the four places.
The presence of a rare Willie Mullins runner tonight makes life interesting, but his Gibraltar has quite a lot on his plate here, and the 9/4 looks tight enough. I'd rather play Noel Meade's Lunar Power going back up to 2m this evening.
He was beaten 5L last time behind the well punted Ceallach, and that horse was part of a Mick Halford double on the evening, but crucially - the 1m4f on that occasion looked dead against Lunar Power. His draw didn't help either in stall one, as while he was prominent, it was evident going into the straight that the field were intent on tacking across to the middle and stands' side. Something we've seen a fair bit of lately at the track, and the cutaway is negating that inside position.
The last 3f were also quite high in terms of a finishing speed at 110% for the winner, and less of a speed test over a more suitable trip will suit Lunar Power far better as he is purely an out-and-out galloper.
He's a smart hurdler and had some decent juvenile form, and ran ninth in the Triumph last season when rated 137. Colin Keane has ridden the horse before and is back to renew the partnership and it's worth taking on Gibraltar in a competitive race.
