Fry's front-running grey set for a big chasing season

Back Ask Me Early @ 4.7515/4 in the 14:00 at Bangor

Vaynor defied a bit of a market drift and won for the column yesterday for another successful single at 5/2, but the elusive second leg was let down somewhat with Natural World bombing out at Chelmsford. Beaten just under 5L, he might not be lasting long at Charlie Abbleby's. Vaynor however showed that sectional times can be such a good guide to a horse's staying abilities.

Wednesday looks a decent jumping day, and trainers can no longer have a beef with the ground as Bangor and Ayr will be both riding very testing this afternoon, and we're at The Dee for what looks a good fixture.

Harry Fry is double-handed with two good chances and Ask Me Early lines up in a Class 2 Handicap over fences for the 3m test for the Charles Lowther Plate.

I've got a lot of time for this dashing grey who created a big impression as a novice when winning at Chepstow (twice) and Uttoxeter and was potentially touted as a Midlands National horse. His jumping on those three victories in 2021 was excellent so it was a real shame he unseated on his last run in public at Wincanton last February on Kingwell Hurdle day.

He had travelled well out in front despite being pestered for the lead and winged a couple of fences down the far side - especially the fourth. His concentration lapsed however as he unseated Sean Bowen at the tenth, but if you can jump Chepstow fences with aplomb like he has in the past, Bangor's fences should be easier, and essentially he's a fine jumper.

In-running he usually travels well with the lead and hit 1.434/9 in defeat in the west Country last winter. And while today is a bigger field, Bangor and up with the pace should suit him - as will the heavy going, as he had no problems with the mud flying around for one of his Chepstow wins.

Fry's horses usually are well found in the market, but he is surprisingly not favourite for this, and at 4.7515/4 he will just about do. The handler is 1-1 at the track this season and overall is 3-12 in five seasons at 25%, and a victory here could set up a season of some of the regional Nationals. Maybe the Eider, as there is a bag of stamina in the dam side.

Some of my favourite jumps' horses have been dashing front-running greys with the likes of Morceli, Senor El Betrutti and Suny Bay, and I am really looking forward to seeing him this afternoon.

The 14:00 is also an Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook and with the 15 runners, you can play for the four places.

Testing ground just the ticket for Lady Adare's return

Back Lady Adare @ 3.55/2 in the 15:05 at Bangor

We're going for another Fry dart on the Bangor card, and he's certainly rolling the dice on Donald McCain's home patch with a couple of good prospects and Lady Adare is looking to maintain her perfect four-from-four record from bumpers and hurdles on handicap debut.

She won at Newcastle last January in spite of a ragged round of jumping and somewhat got away with the victory at 2m. That trip looked on the short side for her and her technique was under pressure due to the pace against speedier horses. However, the 2m3f win following win at Taunton saw her in a much better light - as she barely came out of second gear to win by 16L at 1/4 odds and was mentioned as a Dawn Run candidate. Indeed, post Taunton, the trainer said it was time to raise her sights and Cheltenham was on the agenda, as was the mares' final at Newbury, but she took part in neither.

The 6yo returns today from 130, and a 5lb rise from Taunton when last seen could be generous. She is slightly headstrong and likes to get on with things, and she has won fresh in the past, notably on testing ground.
