Dream to deliver for MacRedmond today
Back Dream Today EW @ 8.07/1 in the 13:40 at Dundalk
Those with good memories will be fully aware I've backed Dream Today on more than one occasion, and hopefully today I am not following the wrong squirrel in what looks a tough-looking 5f Handicap with Collective Power certainly the one to beat who is the justified 3/1 favourite.
Dream Today has been a model of consistency for his trainer Ado McGuinness considering he was rated 107 in 2017. While not quite up to that heady level, he's been around the 90s for nearly six years now, which is a quite remarkable feat in its own right.
He's a 6f winner with plenty of form over that distance and different tactics were employed last time when attempting to make all over the distance again only to finish third, and a fading third at that behind Ampeson.
The selection's last run over 5f (the trip he drops down to today) was at the fag-end of the turf season at the Curragh in a far deeper race than today's - a race in which he was drawn poorly but still hit a place in fourth. Indeed, he's consistent with 16 placed efforts in his career.
The draw in 10 could work out well, as horses most recently at Dundalk have been drawing off the cutaway and avoiding the far side. I's love to see a front-running effort again to get them all stretched, and Cian MacRedmond is a fine apprentice who gets to claim 5lb off a well-treated horse.
Incidentally, Dream Today is the top earner in action at Dundalk today with 294k banked in his career.
Hodd's Girl has form in a better grade
Back Hodd's Girl EW @ 8.515/2 in the 14:40 at Dundalk
A few of the old familiar faces are rocking up at Dundalk for the first time in 2023, and Hodd's Girl is another for McGuinness who is holding her form well and should have a good chance at a decent price at around 8.515/2 to go with the each-way angle and three places.
She's joint-top weight here from 85 and is another horse for which the draw gods have been kind in 13.
I thought she was unlucky behind a very well backed winner in November over 6f here, although Dandyille is a very consistent horse and that was a race worth 13,500 euros to the winner. Not to be sniffed at.
Dandyville met a far clearer passage in the race, and was another winner that shunned the far side and came more down the centre to near, while Hodd's Girl was trapped behind horses and just couldn't get out.
She finished fourth in the race mentioned previously with Dream Today and Ampeson, but didn't look quick enough from off the pace over 6f, so the step up to 7f will suit the grey in my opinion as her two closing sectionals behind Dandyville were quicker than the winner that day.
Apprentice Rob Whearty claims 7lb too, and considering the horse was second in a 0-100 over CD at the end of 2022, Whearty offsetting some weight with a drop in class makes her a good each-way bet. The double on the pair pays 55/1.
