Sea the Speedwell step up to deny favourite

Back Sea Speedwell @ 3.7511/4 in the 14:40 at Leicester

A baking hot day in store with quick ground and what us cricketers would describe as a "shirt front" in the summer sun, although Bridge Road's defeat at 1.330/100 in-running for yesterday's column went into the wardrobe along with the other seconds recently done in-play at short prices.

There is hopefully a bit of quality to come at Leicester this afternoon - although you won't find it in the croquembouche of Classified Stakes racing towards the end of the card. The 14:40 Novice looks the most interesting and William Haggas sends a daughter of Sea The Stars to the track.

She hasn't faced much racing in her career with just two starts but has a pedigree to click on as a 4yo now, and it goes without saying by the sire that the step up in distance to 1m2f looks an obvious call.

Her debut at Kempton last November was behind the now 97-rated Miss Marble, and she looked green in that to finish third. The experience wasn't lost in December though, winning at Kempton from the front with an efficient display in terms of numbers on the clock as she churned out six consecutive sub-13 seconds sectionals including one at 12.05 with 2f to go.

The fact her price is at 11/4 compared to the favourite Qabilah at 6/4 was surprising considering both have similar profiles. But the latter's speed figure wasn't great in a race where Wonderful Times set a slow pace and was turned over at 2/9.

Sea Speedwell is a relation to Spillway, who raced for Eve Johnson Houghton before heading off to Oz to win a Group 1 out there, and the dam Flower Market (who was owned by the Queen) gets 1m2f performers.

Foley can scoop feature price for Harrington

Back Trevaunance @ 4.03/1 in the 19:20 at Leopardstown

A decent race at Leopardstown tonight with the Group 3 Meld Stakes over 9f, and Jessica Harrington and Shane Foley team up with Trevaunance.

She came back for the season to kick-off her campaign to win over 1m at Limerick last time out, and while there could have been a degree of rustiness, she overcame that to win with a nice turn of foot.

That was a tactical three-runner race in which Aidan O'Brien's Galleria Borghese made the running, but was cut down with a late burst on the outside by Trevaunance with a furlong to go, and Galleria Borghese has since boosted the form to come out and win a Listed contest.

She won a Cork Maiden last year in good fashion - a race that was on by Group 1 Passion previously, and that form has stacked up too with a couple of horses coming out of that to record three-figure ratings.

I usually rely on Shane Foley around Leopardstown and he's 5-34 there this term.
