Southwell - 16:25: Back Catch Cunningham
Yesterday's opening selection Mukaafah was well backed and ran way below market expectations, although when you are out of form, you don't want to see a front-runner taken right back and not allowed to bowl along from a good draw. Mostabshir ran well enough behind Mount Athos, but it was a lesson learned and those sexy Newmarket types well-backed, and for fancy connections are too over-bet. I'll be avoiding.
While the Flat has started (of sorts on the turf), we still are engulfed in plenty of All-Weather racing and Thursday's Southwell card is where I am heading with the ground at Fontwell and Wetherby likely to be very attritional.
Jeans Maite is looking to follow up her latest win under a 4lb penalty and she is an important horse as the front-runner and she has plenty of speed to set as the target. She'll go well I am sure, but the penalty does make it tricky.
Catch Cunningham will appreciate having a target to run at at and does stay 6f, so a hard searching pace will suit him and he's down to a nice mark these days.
He was rated 84 at his peak in 2022 for Kevin Ryan and he's now down to 69 and sneaks into this 0-68.
He's also had a run under his belt for the new yard with Michael Herrington and ran well after a break last time at Wolverhampton over 5f behind win-machine Gustav Graves.
That was a similar grade, and I think the stiffer finish here might just suit him better rather than Wolves.
Southwell - 20:00: Back Temple Bruer
Temple Bruer is another horse who looks reasonably well treated from his current mark and he has won off a break before in the past.
This will be his first start for 148 days but had a fairly good turf season last term competing in some tough handicaps.
He wasn't beaten far in a Class 2 at York behind Summerghand and finished fourth in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon last term at a massive price.
Temple Bruer stays 7f but is best at tonight's trip of 6f and off 77, he gets to race off his last winning mark (when scoring in the very popular Racing League) at Newcastle.
