East Street could be on lenient mark for chasing debut

Back East Street @ 4.75 in the 14:30 at Market Rasen

Sue Smith is taking the tried and trusted route with East Street making his seasonal reappearance at Wetherby, as last term he successfully scored over hurdles, so a repeat of the feat will do the trick for his chasing debut on Thursday.

The 6yo was well backed on that occasion into 11/8, and despite being green, displayed some fighting qualities when pestered for the lead by his stablemate Algesiras for much of the race. Once he had seen him off, Kinondo Kwetu was a big challenger and headed East Street, but the selection pinged the last hurdle (one of his best jumps in a ragged round) to knuckle down. His in-running price hit 6.86/1 to highlight how he looked in trouble at one stage, but the pair were 10L clear and the second had come from further back.

Kinondo Kwetu recently won over fences in a Novice at Aintree from 132 and has won five on the spin chasing.

He signed off with a Class 3 win at Hexham over 2m4f last spring and stuck on doggedly to showcase his staying abilities, and the 2m6f today with his run style of being forward-ridden won't be an issue.

His sire Mores Wells comes from a stamina laden family, and he himself won over 2m7f at Rasen, and one of his winners over jumps gets 3m well, so he is certainly one of those Smith stayers for the future. Rain is forecast and winning on good to soft at Hexham hopefully means he'll be fine with the conditions.

His 112 mark looks lenient and from a low weight can make the favourite Bowtogreatness at 6/4 work hard.

Smith could be in better form with just two chase winners this term from 30 runners at just 7%.

Poet can pound his rivals into submission for Pertemps Qualifier

Back Pounding Poet @ 4.03/1 in the 15:05 at Market Rasen

Henry Daly's well-backed favourite Bridge North heads the market, and Daly's Braganza Boy landed a massive punt at the start of the week, although the trainer was completely oblivious to why he was supported. Daly landed the race in 2019 with Rapper.

However, despite the strong market vibes for that one, Pounding Poet is the pick and he runs in the Pertemps Qualifier at 15:05 following victory with a bit in hand last time.

That 0-145 victory at Uttoxeter came in dour fashion in a small field. He looked in a spot of bother heading into the straight as the front two slipped away from him with more pace. But he responded well to pressure and ultimately wore down Copper Coin well and a 3lb rise for that isn't punitive.

CD success is also on his ledger as he won here in the spring and times suggested the ground was a lot quicker than the official good going that day. Once again Pounding Poet looked in trouble and rallied, as he hit a massive 260.0259/1 in-running.

He's a proper old Yeats in build and won't mind the rain either as one of his best runs last season was in Class 2 company at Aintree and he travelled well in that - surprisingly for him. Yeats the poet wrote "The Second Coming", and while the equine version certainly isn't, he is a pretty handy horse.

His trainer Tom Lacey is 2-4 at Rasen this term at 50% and 7-38 at the track in the last five seasons.
