Alan Dudman has had two winners from his last two single selections and he is hoping to continue the run with a pair of promising horses at Hexham for Friday...
- Fiston Du Mou made it 2-2 for Alan yesterday with an 8L win and returned 11/4
- Two good prospects in the north on show for Friday at Hexham
- Al Dudman is backing a near-5/1 Sportsbook double on Friday for his latest multiple
Russell could have a good one in De Legislator
Back De Legislator 1.910/11 in the 13:58 at Hexham
Fiston Du Mou ran out an easy 8L winner yesterday to make it two from two in a couple of days and with Hexham on Friday and some proper jumping ground, hopefully we can collect a profit again heading into the weekend.
The 13:58 2m4f Novices' Hurdle looks a very weak affair and minus the Dan Skelton non-runner, it could be straightforward for the hurdling debutant De Legislator and it's a real treat to have Hexham (another of my top punting tracks) on the back of Sedgefield. I think staying form holds up well at both and are fair tests with often very little trouble in running and no excuses.
The 5yo won a PTP in Ireland by a couple of lengths beating Snake Roll - who recently scored on hurdling debut at Kelso by 15L, and with the horse going for 170,000 at Punchestown in April, he'd certainly be one of the more expensive runners on show today.
Allez Kal and point winner Upton Road both appear in his pedigree and there's stamina there with the former a 3m winner, and this is just the sort of horse his trainer Lucinda Russell excels with - a long-term stayer.
Russell is hardly firing in the winners at a rate, and that's the slight worry that a few of hers are appearing to need the run, but he has a similar profile to last year's winner for Nicky Richards in Crystal Glory - who has a won a PTP well and ended up rated 131 and competed at 3m in the Aintree Grade 1 Hurdle behind Gellino Bello.
Max's Champ is second favourite at 6/5 by dint of a bumper run and looked a stayer from that good ground effort last month.
Quint can make a winning start on his chase debut
Back Captain Quint @ 3.02/1 in the 14:35 at Hexham
A couple of non runners heave weakened the following 14:35, so field sizes aren't exactly made for each-way bets today, but Captain Quint is a horse I expected to make into a useful performer last season and I am looking forward to him making his chase debut this afternoon.
He has a good name too; as the wonderful Robert Shaw played Captain Quint in Jaws.
His trainer Rose Dobbin has wasted little time in messing around over hurdles with just two starts last term, and it's straight over fences this afternoon to start his season.
He made a winning debut in 2021 at Hexham, creating quite an impression with the way he travelled and had no problems dispatching a field. He followed up with a third behind Crystal Glory under a penalty at Newcastle, but that looks a better run now than it did at the time, as he's rated 131 and ran in Grade 1 company subsequently. It was also over 2m6f, which was quite a jump from the minimum, but it gave a clear indication of his expected stamina. Or xS.
A couple of the trainer's novice chasers have performed well in the last fortnight with a winner at Kelso and a recent second at Musselburgh this week.
Hexham is a such a good track for a staying chaser starting out, and Captain Quint certainly has the pedigree and build to make a winning start and should take to fences well. He's another graduate of an Irish PTP and finished second to Guilly Billy - quite a dashing grey for Henry De Bromhead.
We're playing at the top end of the market today with the double paying around 5/1, and I think the first selection will probably end up a bit shorter at around 4/6.
