Bob can be the best mate of all at Cartmel
Back Mah Mate Bob @ 3.02/1 in the 15:40 at Cartmel
Some quality action awaits on Friday with the Curragh and Newcastle providing some depth and stardust, so it's worth checking out elsewhere the tips for a fine day as I'll be going a bit lower down the chain in the hope of getting in a Friday multiple.
Cartmel's scenic course can get us on the way and Mah Mate Bob for the Bewleys ran very well over CD last time behind Rapid Flight, and anywhere near that effort puts him in with a serious chance again.
He jumped well out in front and refused to turn in once it was apparent Jimmy Moffat's horse was the big danger - incidentally Moffat's 50th Cartmel winner.
Mah Mate Bob is a reasonably consistent horse and genuine, and while he is unlikely to find much improvement as a 10yo, he is so well handicapped these days, he is hard to keep out of the punting today.
His last win came in May 2021, in a better class than today and also on fast ground.
Jonathon Bewley rode a winner at Hexham on Saturday on Well Educated, and he celebrated in fine style. I'd like more of the same please Jonathon. He's not exactly a millionaire's shortcake price at 2/1, but it's enough for the sticky toffee multiple.
Nova the new star for Doncaster
Back Nova Legend @ 3.02/1 in the 15:55 at Doncaster
Small fields are the order of the day at Doncaster with four of the seven races holding a total of 20 runners. James Ferguson is one of the Newmarket contingent making the trip up to Rose Hill and he has a good chance of ending a bit of cold snap in terms of winners with Nova Legend.
Judged on his latest effort on handicap debut at Leicester behind Salvator Mundi, the new territory of 1m6f should suit him.
He was rousted along and pushed with half-a-mile to go and he was chopped for pace as Salvator Mundi slipped away from the front travelling well - in complete contrast to Nova Legend who wasn't doing a tap and was last at one stage. But the stamina kicked in and he ended up a fast finishing second on the outside.
Another 20 yards and he would have won. Salvator Mundi has since won a Class 2 handicap, and the third of Terry Kent (Cliffs Of Fury) has also won easily from 77.
Nova Legend could be lazy, and from cheekpieces last time, the visor is on today and I can envisage Doncaster's long straight over the 1m6f today suiting.
He cost 550,000 guineas at one stage, rather surprisingly. A win would be welcome for his young master Ferguson.
