Daily Racing Multiple: Back Lariat and Sole Pretender for 10/1 Irish double

Tipperary
Lariat runs in an Extra Place Special race at Tipperary for Alan on Tuesday

"A drop of 2lb and a good draw points to a good run, and he isn't ground dependant either, as he acts on good to firm and soft."

Back Lariat @ 5.59/2 in the 19:45 at Tipperary

Alan Dudman had his fifth winner in three days yesterday but missed out on a third successive double as Jessiemac failed to fire. His Tuesday multiple pays 10/1 across Ballinrobe and Tipperary...

No pretending with Ballinrobe specialist Sole

Back Sole Pretender @ 2.01/1 in the 18:05 at Ballinrobe

Clear The Runway scored in gritty fashion for the column yesterday, but Jessiemac ran rather flat to deny us six winners out of six selections over the three days. So not all doom and gloom.

Tuesday's big race is the Mayo National at Ballinrobe, but I've swerved that in favour of a more conservative bet with Norman Lee's Sole Pretender, who makes his chase debut this evening.

The 'Robe seems to bring out the best in him as he has never been beaten here in three attempts - all pretty impressive wins. He scored on bumper debut here, and has also won a pair of handicap hurdles by a combined distance of 10L - including the Mayo Handicap Hurdle in 2019 from a mark of 137.

He's a good horse for these tracks and seems to like the idiosyncratic nature around here.

Sole Pretender is rated in the 150s over hurdles and has had a crack a couple of times at the big one in Galway, and has performed with credit in both of those. And for a horse who won the Grade 3 Grimes Hurdle last term easily, his trainer can expect a good start over the timber tonight.

He can make the running, and was always a fluent jumper over hurdles who travels strongly. Norman Lee might not have many horses, but this fella is his stable star and can maintain his superb record at Ballinrobe.

The 8yo also goes well fresh, so the break of 206 days isn't a bother.

Drop in trip key for Lariat's chances

Back Lariat @ 5.59/2 in the 19:45 at Tipperary

A field of 18 for the 19:45 and the sole Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook for Tipperary (although there are three at Ballinrobe), and Lariat is worthy of another chance after his recent third to the heavily punted Isaiah at Navan.

The winner showed a good turn of foot from a hold-up ride and relished the Navan hill, and Lariat finished best of those who sat handier on the pace. Indeed, it looked as though he might have made his move too soon in relation to the first and the second as they came from further off the pace - and they were certainly well strung out as they departed the back-straight for home.

His trainer Ado McGuinness drops him back down to 1m4f tonight, and that looks a wise move, as he did have enough pace to finish second over the distance at Dundalk before the turf season.

A drop of 2lb and a good draw points to a good run, and he isn't ground dependant either, as he acts on good to firm and soft.

It's a contest big on numbers, but not many are in form.
