Maximilian looks to have a bright future

Back Maximilian @ 2.01/1 in the 13:35 at Carlisle

Wednesday was a day of immense frustration. Not only did West Ham miss a penalty at Anfield, yesterday's two picks became one with a non-runner and the second selection drifted out from single figures to a BSP of 32.09, so left with one runner, the fate was almost sealed before the run. James Tate did have a good one on the card, though, as Mount Athos looked a serious customer from 84. Hopefully he's as good as the previous Mount Athos for Luca Cumani.

Thursday's fixture at Carlisle looks to be sprinkled with some quality and Maximilian is out to maintain his perfect two-out-of-two record at the track thus far, as he looks a good northern prospect.

The market hasn't exactly missed him, but at 2.01/1, for those playing in-running, he could trade higher in-play as he has spiked at bigger prices in both of his bumper victories so far - hitting 21.020/1 last time and previously 6.411/2 on his debut.

His stamina looks assured for the step up in distance as he stayed strongly under a penalty last time and the field were well strung out with a big gap to the third.

Rain is forecast for the day and soft conditions, but he looked good on debut - and probably better than his second win, with the way he travelled on his first start last term when the ground was testing. Brian Hughes gave him a lovely ride out wide and once downhill, he moved fairly smoothly before once again digging deep with the field stretched out.

Across his two races, a winner has come from each - both going on to land Hexham Novices' Hurdle victories. While Hughes and McCain always stack up decent numbers here; McCain is 16% in five seasons and Hughes 20% with 56 winners in the same time.

For pedigree buffs, he's a half-brother to a horse called Manchester City and a dam called Platini. If the latter was still playing today, I suspect City would have no problem paying around £300million for one of the game's greatest talents.

No Cruise Yet can add to his Carlisle record

Back No Cruise Yet @ 2.01/1 in the 14:45 at Carlisle

Only three runners for the 14:45 3m2f Handicap Chase, and No Cruise Yet is facing an easier field than he did last time and should justify his price of 2.01/1 against just two opponents.

With a 4-12 record over fences, he could still be progressive as the improvement has really started since the wind surgery, and he's found a good level of consistency too.

The 7yo won the Red Rim Go North Series Final at Carlisle last March with a win off 102, and while off 108 today, this looks less competitive. That victory saw the third trail in by 10L with the front two well clear.

He isn't ground dependant and has versatility, but his CD win last term came in soft conditions, and also won in testing ground at Sedgefield over 3m3f. His stamina looks assured.
