Drawn to the charms of Magnetic for Curragh big field
Back Magnetic North @ 17.016/1 each-way in the 15:45 at the Curragh
After a misfiring week or so, hot on the heels of the September golden spell, it was a relief to fire in a winner with good old Mr Alan yesterday at Nottingham for the column. He drifted too in the betting and returned 8/1 on the BSP.
Starting with the Curragh's 15:45, the last two editions of this 1m4f Handicap have seen the winners sit handy in a big field with winners rated high 50s and low 60s, and Magnetic North off 67 looks one of the best handicapped horses in the race off 67. He was racing in 2019 off a mark around 89, so he is thrown in on that old form.
The tough and hardy 7yo also can race up with the pace, and that style of racing and a liking for a big field saw him bounce back to form last time at Bellewstown in the Barney Curley Charity Cup with a decent fourth on good ground. He's been lowered 1lb too.
His second at Roscommon over 1m4f also saw him run well - hitting 1.392/5 in-running finishing second.
Trainer Ado McGuinness uses his apprentices ever so well in these big fields, and Adam Caffrey will know Magnetic North - as he gave him his first ever winner when made all to score at Navan over 1m5f earlier in the season when claiming 10. He travelled superbly that day too, and at the double figure price, he looks a good each-way bet.
McGuinness has recently got a tune out of the grand Saltonstall and Skontonovski (both for Magnetic North's owners), plus Pierre Lapin at Dundalk. A lot of the trainer's runners drift in the betting for whatever reason and win, so I would never be too perturbed with a market drift on the selection, and this horse was a slider this morning from 12s to 16s.
He stays, makes the running, has form on heavy and good and well treated so hopefully we can get a run out of him on his 51st career start. This however is a selection very much against the stats, and it has to be pointed out that McGuinness at the Curragh this term has a dreadful record; he is just 1-61 all season here. Jim Bolger fares 1-81.
If I was marketing this race, I would have him Ariel, bold, size 12. With Dayjur in Calibri size 6. Ascot (Baaeed and Adayar) - dear oh dear oh dear!
Lavery filly can replicate relation Tax Free on handicap debut
Back Aurora Nova @ 12.011/1 each-way in the 17:30 at the Curragh
A field of 18 go to post for the finale and the Curragh's 5f Handicap, and the unexposed Aurora Nova for Sheila Lavery is a big enough price at 11/1 to go with the each-way angle again, and with the Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook, we can also take advantage of the five places. And remember, you can play two in the same race for an Extra Place Special multiple both to place.
The 3yo filly shaped ever so well on debut at Navan earlier in the season and produced her best ever run in her four-race career to date last time at Down Royal. That was her first run on soft ground and she seemed to handle it very well with the way she travelled out of the stalls, and early on she was able to lie up with the pace easily. For an inexperienced filly, she looked clued-up and was only cut down late on by Gobi Star to lose out.
She also saw quite a bit of daylight three wide before the straight and was a little keen.
The filly is also a relation of the marvellous Tax Free, a fine sprinter for Dandy Nicholls who once landed the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh.
The selection might be at home in a bigger field considering the keenness, and a handicap debut mark of 67 as one of the 3yos in the field looks the way to go - especially with the five places on offer.
