Catterick long distance claims for Fiston
Back Fiston Du Mou @ 10.09/1 in the 13:38 at Catterick
A staying trip and soft conditions are the preferences for Fiston Du Mou, and I am backing him to bounce back after a lacklustre effort last time to kick-start today's double. He's around a 10/1 shot on the Sportsbook and this is also an Extra Place Special race, and even money for a first five finish isn't too bad.
However we'll stick win only, as he produced a good staying effort to score over the stamina-sapping 3m3f at Sedgefield under Brian Hughes in November. He left Ann Duffield afterwards to join Patrick Neville, but he flopped three weeks later - again at Sedgefield. Maybe it was the quick turnaround after a hard race, and he's had over a month to get over the exertions.
Hughes remains on board, and he is 2-10 at the track this term, with a strike-rate in five seasons here of around 19% - which isn't too shabby from 158 rides.
He had previously shaped quite well in a better race at Cheltenham in October before an unseat, and hopefully that stamina in the conditions will be a big asset today.
Easterby has a sound claim with Stars
Back Claim The Stars @ 8.07/1 in the 18:25 at Newcastle
Seven of the 11-strong field for the Newcastle 6f 18:25 are course winners and the form horses have both got decent draws, but Claim The Stars was a 7/1 shot in the morning on the Sportsbook and looks the bet to end his 15-race Maiden status.
Starting with his 0-15 record, it's hardly inspiring and he isn't helping himself at all with a series of slow and poor starts. That was the case at Southwell last time as he was slightly caught out with the front two getting a run from a better position - especially the winner Politics - who injected a 10.99 furlong off a steady and slow pace.
Claim The Stars finished best of those held up, and it was almost a carbon copy of his run on the 2nd of December when it paid to be handy. The first four finished from prominent rides, and he was again the best of those that came deep.
I wouldn't want to give him too many chances, but he is down to his lowest ever mark from 63 (was 80 at one stage), acts at the track and has a good draw.
