Striking can build on his fine Sandown impression

Back Striking Star @ 3.55/2 in the 13:50 at Newbury

One of the best pedigrees on show today at Newbury will be Striking Star for Charlie Appleby, a 2yo out of 1,000 Guineas second Lucida and a Dubawi - who has a 15% strike-rate as a sire with juveniles at Newbury, but it does rise to 19% win on soft and heavy conditions.

And that's certainly what Newbury will be today judged on the treacle-like conditions yesterday and times.

Striking Star got off to the perfect start at Sandown winning on debut, with a taking performance under a hand ride. The early pace was slow, but his end product once the penny dropped was impressive as William Buick that day explored the inside and then switched to the gap on the outside.

Physically it isn't always easy to tell on TV, but he looked a real powerhouse and like many Dubawis could have been a bit tubby for his debut, but it was fairly effortless with a finishing speed of 111%.

It was soft at Sandown, and Striking Star's mother was rated 113 and acted in testing ground and he should be able to handle the step up in class today into Group 3 company, in a good standard as two horses are rated 98 and 100 in opposition.

Appleby has a 32% strike-rate at Newbury this term too. Leadenhall who was in the Sandown race down the field runs in the opener tonight at Chelmsford City.

Bin Suroor can capture St Simon for a fourth time

Back Passion And Glory @ 7.06/1 in the 14:25 at Newbury

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor last won the Group 3 St Simon Stakes in 2017, although it's a race he does well in with three winners in total and two were 4yos.

His Passion And Glory is older and wiser at six, but he has a good strike-rate on turf with his five wins - and crucially he has winning form in heavy.

He finished third in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden at Baden Baden in 2021, and the fact he was sent to Germany suggests he does need a bit of cut.

A perfectly fine effort at Newmarket last time out behind Siskany saw him make the running and he's a strong stayer at 1m4f with form up to 2m. And he did win at Listed level at Sandown earlier in the season and that was a very efficient performance on the clock in terms of consistent sectionals.

This is really a ground selection, as he goes in heavy, and expect him to make the running. Hamish is clearly in good heart but the field looks a bit of a mixed bag in terms of horses scrambling for some form.
