World could be a natural for the Essex surface
Back Natural World @ 4.03/1 in the 19:30 at Chelmsford
I've put up Charlie Appleby's Natural World as one of my bets for today's Daily Racing News column selections, and he is by far the most interesting runner on the Essex card this evening.
The 1m2f feature is worth nearly 14k to the winner, although that is positively peppercorn rent numbers in comparison to what Appleby picked up at Keeneland at the weekend.
Natural World is bred to be very good, and looked very good on debut in April this year - beating both Ottoman Fleet and Lionel from the front. Ottoman Fleet is now rated 109, and Lionel ran in an Irish Classic.
The stage was set, but Natural World fluffed his lines in the Lingfield Derby Trial and then the Cocked Hat at Goodwood. He went off too hard at Lingfield, while the soft ground at Goodwood and the track were both negatives.
He switches to the All-Weather for the first time today, and as one of Frankel's, he has to be of interest for the surface. The super sire has a 33% win record and 50% placed with his 3yos at Chelmsford. And considering this horse was earmarked as a stayer and can make the running too, he could have the perfect set up to lead from the front.
His mark of 101 rates him highly, and as one of the younger runners in the field, he can take care of some horses struggling for a bit of form. A nice break since July should also help him.
Time figures back up Vaynor's staying power
Back Vaynor @ 2.757/4 in the 20:00 at Chelmsford
Nothing fancy with the second selection in Vaynor, who has very solid credentials to land the staying 1m6f Handicap and he should justify his 7/4 price.
The 3yo remains unexposed on the All-Weather and has performed well up to 1m6f races this year. Indeed, he landed a staying contest at Bath in June from 61, but that was his first time tacking the stamina distance as he seemed to enjoy the new test.
The early pace in that race was fast, yet in the closing stages, he was one of only two horses to break the 12 second barrier, so we know he has plenty of stamina to finish well.
His victory at Southwell last time once again highlighted his ability to produce quick sectionals in the closing stages. And off an even pace there, he surged to an 11.64 second latter stage furlong - which was half a second quicker than anything else.
Charlie Hills' horse has stamina and the trainer has opted for Kevin Stott again, who was on at Southwell, and maintains the partnership. Stott is 30% at Chelmsford this season with seven wins from 23.
Vaynor's sire Mastercraftsman has a 15% record at Chelmsford.
