Dame Ethel to hit a perfect winning note on handicap debut
Back Dame Ethel Smyth @ 2.56/4 in the 14:50 at Windsor
John Gosden features heavily today with the two picks, and while the second selection is certainly an each-way price, Dame Ethel Smyth isn't sadly at 13/8 so we go win only today and she looks to have found a good opening with a lenient mark for her handicap debut.
All the 2/1 has been "J Edgared" this morning (hoovered) and at 13/8 and then 6/4, she's a little shorter than she was at sunrise.
However, she produced her best run last time at Yarmouth in a reasonable looking Fillies' Maiden. She got behind early in that against some well-bred types, but she handled the good to soft ground perfectly well (having raced on quick on debut) to finish off her race.
Benoit De La Sayette rides, and he and Gosden have a 33% strike-rate together at Windsor with a 1-3 record.
Seventy-six looks a good mark and by Golden Horn, her stamina comes into play here - especially if the ground turns soft, as the sire has a strike-rate of 18% win and 35% placed in soft or heavy ground, and it's better at Windsor at 33% (one from three).
Her draw in four could also work out well if they stay over the far side.
Pennymoor in the hood makes plenty of appeal
Back Pennymoor each-way @ 8.515/2 in the 16:00 at Yarmouth
Gosden is a master of many things, and Newmarket's finest also fares up exceptionally well on the hooded stats.
His record with the hood is a good one at a win-rate of 28% and a placed record of 46% from 231 runners at all tracks, but it's even better at Yarmouth with a win record of a highly impressive 6-13 at 46% and placed at 54%.
Therefore Pennymoor with Frankie Dettori on, is well worth an each-way interest in Yarmouth's feature today at 16:00 for fillies and mares.
She is the only one without a run this season, and while it can be off-putting and point to a problem or two, she is racing for the first time of the campaign against a group who have been busy - including Aidan O'Brien's Ark who looks exposed.
Pennymoor didn't race as a 2yo and crammed a fair bit into 2021 - a campaign which was hit and miss. However, she looked a strong stayer at Kempton and seemed to handle soft ground at Pontefract on her second start. She's out of a German Oaks winner too, so I suspect soft ground will be her thing.
She has drifted this morning and I don't mind that to 7/1 at all.
