Six to choose from, with Ispolini getting the verdict
15:05 Meydan - Back Ispolini @ 9.08/1
Yesterday's efforts from the two selections were shocking with Panic Attack running miles below par and Birchdale never at the races. Maybe the latter is not the horse I thought he was.
Hopefully we can bounce back as we head to the sunnier climes of Meydan for our regular Thursday stint of pre-carnival action, and even Frankie Dettori is reeling back the years in Steely Dan style. He'll be donning the Godolphin blue silks for his old employers.
With six to choose from, our first bet unsurprisingly is a Godolphin selection. I am with Ispolini.
He displayed some ultra-smart Meydan form in 2019 when finishing second behind Cross Counter in the Dubai Gold Cup - something of a personal best and he travelled very well in that. He wasn't too bad either in the Nad Al Sheba Trophy when he breezed in by 10 lengths.
Charlie Appleby's runner is a smooth going sort that needs switching off to ride with plenty of cover, so we'll have to take the medicine and sit in behind with the horse from the wide draw, and expect to see him weave through late.
He has gone well fresh in the past and should have enough pace to deal with the drop back to 1m4f.
Zakouski can trouble Military March
16:15 Meydan - Back Zakouski @ 5.04/1
The presence of Military March looms large for an excellent renewal of the Group2 Singspiel Stakes on Thursday, and he could be different class in this if he replicates his run in the 2,000 Guineas behind Kameko.
The Boys in Blue are strong-handed, with previous winner Dream Castle in the field, plus Zakouski.
Military March is a little short in the betting at 13/8, so I'd rather take a punt on Zakouski who was 2-2 at Meydan last year and can make up for lost time. He himself was at one time thought to be a Guineas' horse.
The selection clocked a quick closing sectional winning the Zabeel Mile last term, and that was a stylish performance overcoming a steady pace. He previously had gagged up in a handicap by four lengths - which was his first start for 267-days so he goes well off the shelf.
