Sergeants Legacy is overpriced at Kempton
Sergeants Legacy makes his handicap debut at Kempton this evening and looks to have a good chance having shaped better than the bare result in novice races.
On his debut at Lingfield, he was slowly away from the stalls and was detached from the field in a slowly run race. He was shaken along just after halfway and was pushed wide on the final bend by Niloufar before being switched back to the rail and he ran on well, clocking the fastest final two furlongs.
He was quicker away on his second start over the same C&D but was heavily restrained to race at the back of the field in another slowly run race. He was caught in behind two rivals around the bend but once in the clear, he ran on well despite not being given an overly hard time to finish fifth.
Sergeants Legacy was never remotely in contention on his latest start at Wolverhampton when hanging right around the bend. The switch to a right-handed track for the first time today should see him in a better light, as will the step up to seven furlongs and the longer home straight.
Given this more suitable scenario, I'm hopeful that Sergeants Legacy can take a step forward from those runs in novice races and any 4/15.00 or bigger appeals.
Charles Morin's price has shortened this morning but I think he's still too big given he's shown enough ability to suggest an opening mark of 55 could underplay his ability.
He made his debut for Henri-Francois Devin at Deauville and while he finished last, he wasn't beaten by some a collection of talented rivals including the winner, Bright Picture, who has since won a Listed race.
Charles Morin was well beaten next time in very testing ground at Lyon and was bought for 16,000gns after that to join Pat Phelan.
The hood that he had worn in France was left off on his debut for Phelan at this track. Having broken fairly well from the stalls, he was restrained to race at the back of the field in a slowly run race. He couldn't get anywhere near the leaders from that position but made a little late headway while not being given a hard time.
The quality of his performance on debut suggests that Charles Morin could have more ability than his opening mark of 55 and he has the potential to take a step forward from his debut for this yard in a more suitable scenario. Any 12/113.00 or bigger appeals.
