Newbury, Saturday, 14:15 - Coral Racing Club Intermediate Handicap Hurdle (Registered As The Gerry Feilden): Back Give It To Me Oj @ 6/17.00

Dan Skelton's Live Conti is likely to go shorter than his current 11/43.75 price on the Sportsbook for the 14:15 known formerly as the Gerry Feilden, and could be well a handicap blot so to speak from his mark of 143 for his run run in a handicap since his second at Aintree in a Grade 1.

He'll have top weight for a young horse but I like the claims of the more experienced Give It To Me Oj.

Priced at 6/17.00 on the Sportsbook, he's a fairly adaptable sort in terms of going with scores on both soft and good and really impressed in the jumping department when winning at Newbury last winter in February - and a round of hurdling that would have made Ed Moses envious.

That was in his juvenile days and he progressed again winning as a novice at the sharper Huntingdon before taking a nice pot in the Sandown final at a big price of 20/1. He had plenty of weight that day too and since has also squeezed a couple of runs in on the Flat.

Gary and Josh Moore haven't had too many "Saturday horses" to go to war with and last term was pretty wretched for the Sussex team, but Give It To Me Oj flew the flag a little and I like his experience as a second season hurdler coming into this.

Newbury. Saturday, 14:55 - Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase: Back The Doyen Chief E/W @ 14/115.00

We've had the Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase, but the Coral Gold Cup looks stronger and I fancy going double-handed with a pair of decent prices.

I've been a fan of The Doyen Chief for a while, although I was tempted to rescind my membership after his catastrophic error at the last at Bangor on his seasonal comeback. He traded at an agonising 1.162/13 in the run and was beaten by an outsider and he should be coming into Newbury with a winning prep.

A few of Alan King's horses of been hitting the dreaded second spot - five in fact since November 11th - so perhaps they are just needing the run, and King is very quiet at the time of writing with a record of 0-22 at a big fat zero percent in the last two weeks.

King, I think, has got too bogged down in the whole left-handed and right-handed conundrum, which ought to be put to bed as he scored at Warwick last term and Bangor should be a win. The trainer has always had this earmarked as his number one target for the horse, whose jumping is usually very good, so the Newbury fences won't scare him, King nor me.

King said this week: "The Doyen Chief worked well this morning, and the plan, if everything goes well through the week, is to run in the Hennessy (Coral Gold Cup in new money). He had the perfect prep for Newbury at Bangor, and, though he has gone up another 3lb and is untried over the three and a quarter miles, he came out of Bangor well and has been in good form in the mornings."

Second-season novices do well in this race and the yard won this with the brave Smad Place a decade ago.

Newbury, Saturday, 14:55 - Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase: Back Lowry's Bar E/W @ 20/121.00

Lowry's Bar has form tied in with The Doyen Chief from their novice days last season, beating him in an Exeter skirmish in soft conditions.

For a Philip Hobbs chaser, he jumped well at times last season, something which cannot often be levelled up those Hobbs' young fencers, and his round of jumping at Chepstow at the Welsh National meeting looked pretty good in the fog.

He is unexposed over 3m and I have little doubt he'll get the trip well, as his effort over 3m at Windsor was a three-runner race and not the sternest test of his stamina abilities. His bad mistake three out didn't help either.

Soft ground will hold no fears and Hobbs partnered by Johnson White seem to be in much better shape these days and have some good prospects for the season.

Southwell, Friday, 15:15: Back Pocklington E/W @ 10/111.00

As a Friday bonus, two good races are priced up at Southwell for the afternoon and Pocklington has got to have a serious chance of hitting a place at 10s.

His York efforts this season have seen him good close - and there aren't many bad sprints for 90-rated horse on the Knavesmire.

He was fifth in the York Dash over the far side when short of room, and was third over 6f at the Ebor meeting and travelled ever so well, like he often does.

Back on the All-Weather looks a big move as a 2-3 record shows he could improve further and I've always thought he could be a Group sprinter and certainly a 100+ horse. He scored in his firs two runs at Newcastle, and scored readily in both tracking the pace.
