Scottie Scheffler
PGA record: (most recent result on the right) 4-8-MC-2-8-1
The World No. 1 went to last year's PGA Championship with zero experience of the host, Quail Hollow, but won anyway, saying afterwards: "I didn't have my best stuff, but I kept myself in it, and I stepped up on the back nine. That's about it." It was classic, downbeat, but ultimately triumphant, Scottie Scheffler. His current form is a curiosity with just one win this year (in his first start), but he has finished second in each of his last three outings, including the Masters. He also really likes weekend golf, going sub-70 in both rounds three and four in 13 of his last 15 starts.
Angle? Even by his own standards, he is very good in the PGA Championship with five top 10 finishes from six starts (in the other majors, he is "only" 12-for-20).
First round record? He's 4-for-6 at breaking 70 in a PGA first round and has twice been one shot off the lead.

PGA record: 3-3-64-1-8-1-17-MC-22-50-8-33-49-8-7-12-47
The Northern Irishman's return to the year's first major was a wild ride that took in the Champions Dinner, a sensational first 36 holes that built a six shot lead, a terrible third round that lost the advantage, and another super Sunday that allowed him to join elite company as one of only four successful defenders of the Green Jacket. He's excited about what comes next. "I don't think I'll go through that lull of motivation like last year," he said. So what happens next? More glory? He was T19 last week in his first start since the Masters.
Angle? He's finished T5 at Aronimink, and has three Donald Ross design top 10s in the majors at Oak Hill and Pinehurst. He's also a three-time winner at East Lake which Ross redesigned.
First round record? He tied the first round lead in his only start at Aronimink with a 62.
Bryson DeChambeau
PGA record: 33-MC-MC-4-38-4-2-2
Earlier this year, the two-time runner-up in this championship revealed that he'd played Aronimink as prep and was excited that it reminded him of Ridgewood, a course he has won on. If that's the good news, the bad is that, after winning twice on LIV in March, he badly missed the cut in the Masters and withdrew from LIV Mexico after grumbling and griping about the state of the course. He is, however, a two-time winner on Ross designs (Pinehurst and Detroit) and was third in last week's LIV Virginia.
Angle? His last 11 major championships have been pure champagne or shambles with eight top 10 finishes and three missed cuts.
First round record? He led the 2023 PGA after round one at the Ross-created Oak Hill.

PGA record: 58-4-MC-13-8-MC-8
A year ago, the Spaniard headed into this championship's final round sitting T5 and he was very briefly tied for the lead on the back nine but finished bogey-double bogey-double bogey. "The first time I've been in position to win a major and haven't done it," he said. "I'll get over it." But how long will it take? He remains utterly magnificent on LIV, winning and finishing second with remarkable consistency, but the majors are still proving tricky. He has, on the other hand, finally reached an agreement with the DP World Tour.
Angle? Aside from LIV questions and major troubles, he's never convinced on original Ross designs.
First round record? His best first round position in the last six PGA starts is T29.
Cameron Young
PGA record: 3-MC-63-47
The New Yorker's confidence continues to ride high in the wake of his excellent Ryder Cup debut last September. He won the Players Championship in March, the Cadillac Championship this month and, in between, he was a fine T3 in the Masters. "No negative other than obviously I would've loved a different result," he said of the latter result. "I played plenty well enough to win today. I've gotten really comfortable with where I'm at and how to handle myself."
Angle? His breakthrough first PGA Tour win last summer came on the Ross-designed Sedgefield (he has also been second at Detroit).
First round record? He thrashed an opening 63 when winning at Sedgefield (and a second round 62).
Xander Schauffele
PGA record: MC-35-16-10-MC-13-10-1-28
After finishing T9 in the Masters, the Californian said: "I definitely feel a lot better, haven't thought about injury for a good three or four months. It's nice to focus on playing well, getting stronger, and things of that nature." He has six top 20s in his last eight starts, but was only T60 last week. He does have a fine record on the Ross redesign at East Lake.
Angle? It's an oddity that he has won the PGA Championship and the Open, but has a lower top 10 ratio at them (5-for-17) than he does at the majors he hasn't won, the Masters and US Open (13-for-18).
First round record? He opened the 2018 BMW Championship at the Ross-designed Aronimink with a 63 (T3) and added a 64 to grab the halfway lead.
Ludvig Åberg
PGA record: MC-MC
The Swede's experience of this championship has not been good. Indeed, although he's only played it twice, he's yet to play at the weekend. He's flirted with a win this year (first round lead at Harbour Town, 54-hole lead at Sawgrass, close at Bay Hill and San Antonio), but he's yet to lift a trophy.
Angle? He's still played just nine majors and has five top 25s and four missed cuts.
First round record? He made a fast start in the 2024 US Open at the Ross-designed Pinehurst (a 66 for T3).
Matt Fitzpatrick
PGA record: 49-MC-MC-41-MC-23-5-MC-MC-8
The Yorkshireman's victory in the DP World Tour Championship at the end of last year was his first in two years and this spring he's added the Valspar Championship, the RBC Heritage and (alongside his brother) the Zurich Classic after falling one shot shy of extra holes in the Players Championship. It's been scintillating stuff and he'll be eyeing a second major championship victory to add to the 2022 US Open.
Angle? In his best two PGA efforts he was top 10 all week. Weirdly, he's never been top 10 at the end of even one round in his other championship appearances.
First round record? He co-led last year's Open after 18 holes.
Collin Morikawa
PGA record: 1-8-55-26-4-50
2026 has been a frustration for the Californian. It began with victory in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and he followed it with four top 10s, including the Masters. But he achieved that latter result with a grimace on his face due to a back injury. "This blew any expectations I had for the week," he said at Augusta. "Honestly, I was just surviving each day, but we managed to get through all 72 holes."
Angle? He really does move on PGA Moving Day. Twice into contention (65 on debut, 67 to grab the 54-hole lead in 2024) and the other four times backwards, always with a 74.
First round record? It's very easy to be wary about him waking up with a stiff back.
Justin Thomas
PGA record: 18-66-1-6-37-MC-1-65-8-MC
The contrast between the Kentucky man's PGA Championship record and his efforts in the other majors is not just significant - it is vast. He has two wins in the PGA and none in the others. Moreover, he has four top 10s in 10 PGA appearances. And the other majors? Four in 31. He was T12 in the 2018 BMW Championship at Aronimink.
Angle? Since his second PGA win in 2022, he has just one major championship top 10 in 15 starts.
First round record? He's only once ended a PGA Championship first round in the top 20.
Tommy Fleetwood
PGA record: MC-MC-61-35-48-29-MC-5-18-26-41
The Englishman went into the weekend of the Masters T4 but finished the tournament T33. "A long way from being good enough to contend," he said, adding a brutal assessment: "Hit it in the wrong place, short game was awful, didn't putt the way I did in the first two rounds and my scoring this weekend was dreadful." Can he turn it around? He's gone eight major championship since his last top 10. He was a neat T5 last week.
Angle? This championship has been a tough one to crack for him: just one top 10 in 11 appearances, but he was T8 at Aronimink in the 2018 BMW Championship and won at East Lake (a Ross redesign) last summer.
First round record? He's just 2-for-11 at breaking 70 in a PGA Championship first round.
Justin Rose
PGA record: 23-MC-MC-41-12-9-MC-MC-MC-3-33-24-4-22-MC-19-29-9-8-13-9-6-MC
When the Englishman finished T3 at the Masters it seemed more proof that he is both ageless and an ongoing major championship contender. It was, after all, his third top three finish in his last six majors and his fourth top six in his last eight. That's a record anyone would be proud of, never mind a 45-year-old. But then he announced a move to McLaren clubs. Yes, the F1 car manufacturer.
Angle? If you're unswayed by the gear change, four top 10s in his last six PGA Championships reads very well, as does this superb course record (1-15-2).
First round record? 3-for-23 at sitting top six in the PGA after 18 holes (he's 10-for-21 in the Masters).
Brooks Koepka
PGA record: 70-15-5-4-13-1-1-29-2-55-1-26-MC
The American's victory in this championship in 2023 (at the Ross-designed Oak Hill), shortly after he was second in the Masters is beginning to look like a 1-2 off. Because between 2017 and 2021 he played 17 majors, recorded 10 top 10s and won four of them. Since the start of 2022, he's played another 17 majors and that first and second are his only top 10s. He was, however, T12 in the Masters last month - so is he returning to old ways?
Angle? He's been leading or within two shots of the 54-hole lead in six of his 13 PGA Championship starts.
First round record? He's been T3 or better after 18 holes four times in this championship.

On his championship debut two years ago, the American was a fresh maiden winner, having claimed the Myrtle Beach Classic a week earlier. He missed the cut at Valhalla and went on to struggle for over a year on tour. But victory in the Scottish Open, followed by wins in the Sony Open and Phoenix Open this January and February, have vaulted him upwards.
Angle? He hinted at future major potential with third place in last year's Open.
First round record? He's yet to break 72 in the first round of a major championship.
Viktor Hovland
PGA record: 33-30-41-2-3-28
When the Norwegian won the 2025 Valspar Championship he warned that he wasn't yet back to his best and he's proved it since. The rest of his season was solid but it lacked sparkle and 2026 has been more of the same. His best effort was T10 in the Phoenix Open back in January although he was one shot off the halfway lead at the RBC Heritage before tumbling back to T42.
Angle? He owns a good record on Ross courses: second at Oak Hill, T4 at Sedgefield, T12 and T13 at Detroit, and a win at the Ross-redesigned East Lake.
First round record? He's a very solid major starter, sitting T30 or better after 18 holes in 19 of his 25 starts (6-for-6 in the PGA).

A bright start to the season saw the Japanese stars foiled in a play off at the Phoenix Open and he backed it up with T8 in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am a week later. He was also T12 in the Masters, albeit without ever remotely contending, but it is his only top 20 since Pebble Beach. When T15 at Aronimink in the 2018 BMW Championship he ranked first for hitting Greens in Regulation.
Angle? He registered back-to-back top fives in the championship in 2016/17 but hasn't made the top 10 since.
First round record? He's never been inside the top 10 after 18 holes of the PGA Championship.
Joaquin Niemann
PGA record: 71-MC-MC-30-23-MC-39-8
When the Chilean thrashed a final round 68 to leap from T31 to T8 in last year's PGA Championship it marked something of a breakthrough because it was his very first top 10 in a major. But, after missing the cut in the US Open and the Open, and not qualifying for the Masters, it remains that way. He was T8 last week, his second top 10 in his last 13 starts around the world.
Angle? It's hard to overlook that major record: one top 10 in 26 appearances.
First round record? He's 3-for-8 at breaking 73 on a PGA Thursday.
Patrick Cantlay
PGA record: 33-27-3-43-23-MC-9-53-MC
The Californian is good friends with Xander Schauffele and they have similar PGA Tour records. But in the majors it is a very different story. Indeed, Cantlay's efforts have been quite simply poor with just five top 10 finishes in 36 appearances. He even managed to miss the cut in three of them last summer, a run that started at this championship.
Angle? He doesn't just fail to rack up major top 10s, he very rarely contends.
First round record? He's only 3-for-9 at breaking 72 in a PGA first round.

PGA record: 25-10-MC-10-48-MC-38-13-15-63-60
The Englishman was T3 in the Masters and afterwards said of the majors: "I try not to treat them any differently. Every round, every shot, I just go out there and try my best." It was his third top 15 in a row at Augusta and he played very well in last year's final two majors as well: T4 in the US Open and T16 in the Open.
Angle? He's mostly played better on Friday in the PGA: he's 9-for-11 at improving on his first round score in the second lap.
First round record? Last year's 68 was his first sub-70 score on a PGA Thursday.
Ben Griffin
PGA record: MC-WD-8
The 30-year-old's PGA Championship record very neatly mirrors his entire professional career. In the first act, he struggled (missed cut). In the second act, he left the pro ranks and got a desk job (withdrawal). And in the third act, he has thrived (T8 last year). His T3 in this month's Cadillac Championship was a first top 10 since he won the WWT Championship at the end of last year.
Angle? He has three top 12 finishes at the Ross-designed Sedgefield.
First round record? Check this: after eight straight tournaments ending round one in the top 10 he's followed it with 13 events without doing so once.
Corey Conners
PGA record: 64-MC-17-MC-12-26-19
The Canadian couldn't hide his hurt leaving Augusta after finishing T49 having ranked 40something at the end of very lap. "Frustrating week," he said. "I feel like my game is close to being where I want. Just wasn't able to put the scores together." His results don't necessarily back him up with just one top 10 since he was T10 in last summer's Open.
Angle? A quirky one: he's carded three 67s in his last four weekend PGA Championship rounds.
First round record? He was the first round solo leader in the 2021 PGA and one shot back of the pacesetter in 2023.

PGA record: 59-30-13-2-MC-MC-13-17-34-18-53-MC
The American's second place finish in the 2017 PGA at Quail Hollow remains his only championship top 10. And, somewhat incredibly, in his other 11 tournament starts he only once ended any round in the top 10. He got 2026 off to a great start with two wins on the DP World Tour in the Middle East and was T12 in the Masters (after being second through 36 holes).
Angle? He does have a Donald Ross win in his CV: the 2013 Wyndham Championship.
First round record? He's only once been in the top 10 after a PGA first round.

PGA record: MC-MC-12-22-71-50-37-71-60-MC-23-MC
The Georgia man was a fast finishing T3 in the Masters after which he said: "I handled the nerves well. I felt I could do this. Really happy with how I competed." It added to his growing belief in the majors because he was also T10 in last year's Open and US Open - and T5 and T7 in the same championships in 2024.
Angle? Six of his last seven starts on Donald Ross original designs have reaped top 10s including T7 in the US Open at Pinehurst - and he has a fine record at the Ross-redesigned East Lake.

But the truth is that it is a long, long time since he last contended in a major. The 2023 Masters, in fact, when he was T4. That makes it 12 majors since he last added a top 10 to the log book.

The Scot did not exit Augusta National having added to his legacy. Not, at least, in a positive way. Instead, he threw potty-mouthed hissy fits and refused to accept that he was in any way in the wrong. Before then, he was T4 in the Players Championship and second in the Texas Open. And he was a contender and top 10 finisher in last year's US Open and Open.
Angle? He's played Sedgefield, Detroit, Pinehurst and Oak Hill - all of them Donald Ross courses and not recorded a top 40 on any of them.

It's an unlikely record for a four-time PGA Tour winner whose consistency and numbers always impress the stats experts.

There is plenty for the 2025 US Ryder Cup captain to feel chipper about. He's a course winner (in the 2018 BMW Championship), he's a former winner of the tournament (on debut in 2011) and he was also T8 last year.
Angle? The bad news is his form: a best of T12 in 2026 - his only top 20.
First round record? He's gone sub-70 in four of his last five championship first rounds.
Harris English
PGA record: 61-MC-48-60-19-64-MC-18-2
Last year's second at Quail Hollow was his best championship performance (albeit thanks to a final round 65 from off the pace) but he followed it with T2 in the Open. It made for a fine season of elite golf in which Scheffler pipped him both times.
Angle? Three top 20s in his last five PGAs and three top 10s in his last six US Opens. He likes the nomadic US majors.
First round record? Boom or bust: four sub-70s and four failures to break 74 in nine PGA starts.
Dustin Johnson
PGA record: 10-5-MC-48-8-7-MC-13-27-2-2-MC-MC-55-43-MC
The American finished second in this championship 2019 and 2020 at Bethpage and Harding Park, but since then he has gone five starts without breaking the top 40. Form-wise he has nothing better than T10 (in March) since the middle of August.
Angle? He did win The Barclays on the Ross-designed Plainfield in 2011.
First round record? His last six major championship first round scores read: 74-78-73-74-74-74.
Aaron Rai
PGA record: MC-39-19
Since he won the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship last November, shortly after recording T3 in the BMW PGA Championship, his form had flattened out until he got into the mix when fifth last week in the Myrtle Beach Classic.
Angle? He has a fine Donald Ross record: 1st and T5 at Sedgefield and T9 and T2 at Detroit - and all four times he was in the top five after 18 holes.
First round record? He's been top 20 after 18 holes in six of his last eight majors.

Rickie Fowler
PGA record: 58-51-MC-3-30-33-5-12-36-MC-8-23-MC-63-MC
The 37-year-old closed 2025 with two top 10s and opened 2026 in neat form, too, before a lapse in March. But top 10s at Harbour Town, Doral and Quail Hollow last week see him arrive in top form. He was the leader of the 2023 US Open through 54 holes, but slipped to T5 and hasn't contended in a major since.
Angle? His most recent PGA Tour win (2023) came at the Ross-designed Detroit.
First round record? He's been top 10 after 18 holes in two of his last three PGA Tour starts.
