Smalley can go well at East Lake and Danes chanced at the Belfry

The FedEx Cup playoffs conclude at the Tour Championship at East Lake this week and only five men in the field of 30 are trading at triple-figure odds so options for the column are limited.

The 2017 Tour Championship winner, Xander Schauffele, who has gone on to show a real liking for the venue, as well as other Donald Ross designed tracks, is the only long-shot winner of the Tour Championship in many a year and when Tommy Fleetwood won 12 months ago at just 14/115.00, he was the first winner in seven years to be priced up at more than a single-figure price.

Admittedly, all six winners before Fleetwood had benefited from a handicap start so it's a very different event now that the field of 30 all start from scratch, but the Tour Championship hasn't been a great tournament for long-shots and I'm more than happy to leave the event alone, although one outsider did interest me...  

Alex Smalley is playing East Lake for the first time this week but there's every chance he'll take to the track given he finished second in the US PGA Championship in May around the Ross designed Aronimink and seventh in the Wyndham Championship at the start of the month at another Ross layout - Sedgefield Country Club.

Smalley is trading at 110.0109/1 in the win market on the Betfair Exchange and he's an interesting runner in the Top 10 Finish market at around 7/24.50.

In contrast to the Tour Championship, this week's DP World Tour event, the British Masters, staged at the Belfry, has been a decent event for long-shots and the Belfry has been a great venue for the Danes lately too.

Niklas Norgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen have won two of the last four editions of this event, Nicolai Hojgaard finished second to Alex Noren last year and his twin brother, Rasmus, won the once only staged UK Championship at the Belfry back in 2020.

I've picked out two Danes trading at triple-figure odds, starting with the very recent Danish Championship winner, Jeff Winther.

British Masters bet#1 - Jeff Winther @ 160.0159/1

Since the British Masters returned to the Belfry in 2021, elite approach play has been the key to success with Greens In Regulation and Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green being the two metrics to concentrate on so the fact that Jeff Winther has ranked eighth, 17^th and third for SG: Tee-to-Green in his last three starts bodes very well.

He also topped the GIR rankings when coming from off the pace to win in his homeland last time out in the Danish Golf Championship.

Winther withdrew from this event in 2021, and he missed the cut in 2022, but in his last three visits he's finished eighth, 33^rd and 41^st so he's shown an aptitude for the venue.

It's never easy to win back-to-back events and Winther is an in-and-out performer but after winning in his homeland at the age of 38, securing his playing privileges on the DP World Tour for another couple of years, he's likely to be very happy and relaxed this week and he might just cause another surprise.

Nexo Championship bet#2 - Marcus Helligkilde @ 210.0209/1

Although he's won three times on the HotelPlanner Tour, fellow Dane, Marcus Helligkilde, is yet to get across the line on the DP World Tour but he's got a fair excuse given he spent more than18 months out of the game due to a severe neck injury.

After a tough period where a diagnosis couldn't be found, Helligkilde finally underwent a procedure to address a pinched nerve, which involved the removal of a disc in his neck and the insertion of a metal plate.

He only returned to the game in April this year and for much of 2026, a victory has looked highly unlikely, but he's found a bit of form of late.

After a 14^th and a missed cut on the Alps Tour in April, Helligkilde put up form figures on the DP World Tour reading MC-MC-MC-14-MC-MC but since his weekend off at the co-sanctioned ISCO Championship in the states, he's finished a respectable 15^th in the co-sanctioned Corales Puntacana Championship in his penultimate start in July and seventh behind Winther in the Danish Golf Championship last time out.

The 29-year-old ranked 12^th for GIR and SG: Tee-to-Green in the Dominion Republic and he ranked 21^st and 10^th for those two metrics in Denmark so his approach play is starting to sharpen up, and he may just be ready to contend strongly on his second visit to the Belfry.

Helligkilde finished down the field (72^nd) on his only previous visit, in 2023, but he was inside the top 10 after the opening round so there's a chance the course suits his eye.
