Introduction to the Tour Championship

Ding ding. Round three.

We've reached the FedEx Cup finale as the top 30 players on the standings battle it out for a huge $10m jackpot in the Tour Championship at East Lake.

Let's be honest, there's probably never going to be a satisfactory way of concluding the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Giving the best players starting strokes (that was scrapped in 2024) made it nigh on impossible for most of the chasing pack to have any sort of impact.

But by making it a winner-takes-all one-off means 28th-placed Adam Scott - best result this year: fourth - could take victory this week and wipe out Scottie Scheffler's superb body of work across the first eight months of 2026.

Anyway, we at least go to the last event on a good note after last week's headline tip, Wyndham Clark, took victory by three strokes at the BMW Championship.

That moved Clark to third in the FedEx Cup standings, behind Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick. Cam Young and winless Si Woo Kim round at the top five.

East Lake is a par 70 measuring 7,440 yards with TifEagle Bermuda greens.

In that respect, there are some obvious similarities to the first two courses used in the Playoffs.

TPC Southwind (FedEx St. Jude) was a Bermuda course with an emphasis on good driving while Bellerive (BMW Championship) had almost identical par and measurements (70, 7,448 yards).

Tour Championship Bet 1 - Collin Morikawa each-way @ 18/119.00

It's tempting to play the 'without Scheffler' markets this week but I can honestly say I've never ever benefitted from taking the favourite out of matters.

In addition, we're not completely sure that Scheffler is 100% after suffering hand, foot and mouth disease and he's never shot the low 72-hole score at East Lake. So, let's switch to a man who has.

Starting strokes meant Collin Morikawa didn't win the 2024 Tour Championship. He had to give Scheffler six shots and could only narrow the gap to four despite shooting 18-under for the week.

The year before, Morikawa opened 61-64 at East Lake to lead by five. That beat Tiger Woods' record 36-hole total by two.

The problem was, he was trying to wipe out a nine-shot deficit that week and he completely ran out of gas on the weekend.

But the two-time major winner clearly loves this layout (he also opened with a 64 last year) and has the form to throw in a huge challenge this week.

After looking a little rusty at St. Jude following a month off, he really clicked into gear at the BMW Championship last week, shooting 68-65-67-68 to finish fourth.

His ball-striking was strong, as you'd expect, but it was worth noting that he gained strokes on the greens for the sixth time in seven events.

At East Lake, he's ranked in the top five for Approach in each of the last four editions so, add in the greater driving accuracy he has compared to some of his rivals, and everything looks in place for him to shine here again.

Back Morikawa, a winner at Pebble Beach earlier this year, at 18/119.00 (1/4 Odds, 4 Places).

Tour Championship Bet 2: Russell Henley each-way @ 25/126.00

The Tour Championship is a home game for Georgia Bulldog Russell Henley and it's fair to say he loves playing in his own state.

At Augusta earlier this year, he shot 66-68 on the weekend to finish third, bettering his 2023 Masters finish by a single spot.

And in this event, in terms of 72-hole aggregate scores, his finishes reading back from 2025 show 2-4-13-3-12.

Combine those two tournaments and he's finished in the top four in three of his last four starts in Georgia.

Henley has gone a little quiet since winning the Charles Schwab Challenge at the end of May but he was ninth in The Open at Royal Birkdale and looks to be building some momentum through the Playoffs after 30th at St. Jude followed by 12th last week.

His Approach numbers at Bellerive were the best he's produced since the Charles Schwab win while he ranked in the top 15 for SG: Putting for the fifth straight event.

Henley's straight driving is suited to East Lake and works better on an A to B layout where he can hit to his spots. It was a similar requirement at St. Jude where he was 1st for Driving Accuracy.

Last year, after opening 61-66 to lead after both 18 and 36 holes, he said of East Lake: "When I'm hitting it well, just like anybody in the top 30, I feel like you can attack it because from the fairway you can attack it.

"I love the Bermuda greens. I think they putt really true. There's just a good feeling I have with being back in Atlanta, being close to home."

Tour Championship Bet 3: Justin Rose each-way @ 40/141.00

With just four each-way places, it's hard to find much appeal further down the betting.

We need a player who can just pop, proving his very best golf can still see off elite fields.

Add in a special feeling for Georgia and the name that leaps out is Justin Rose.

Rose scored a stunning seven-shot win in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines earlier this year while his previous victory prior to that came here in the FedEx Cup Playoffs (Fed Ex St. Jude Championship) last August.

So far in this year's Playoffs he's dropped a few hints without quite getting everything together.

When defending at St. Jude he showed a lack of sharpness after a break but closed with a 64 to finish 39th.

And at last week's BMW Championship he had three good rounds (a 66, a 67 and a 69) but was undone by a Saturday 73.

During that 22nd-place finish, Rose ranked 6th for Approach so his irons were dialled in. He was also 7th for Total Driving which is a key stat at East Lake this week.

The Englishman has only played this event once since 2019 but he closed with a 65 last year.

And in his other five starts at East Lake you'll find a second and two fourths.

In 2019 he said: "Obviously, it's handy if you like East Lake. To be back at a golf course that you enjoy, I think, is exciting for sure. It's a great golf course. It's one I really, really enjoy playing."

After some close calls here and two play-off losses at Augusta National (also third there this year), Rose must feel Georgia owes him a win.

Maybe it comes this week.
