Wednesday Football Tips: Marinho price a special one

With Europe's World Cup qualifying over for another month and South America's qualifiers not resuming until Thursday, there's a bit of a gap in the football schedule on Wednesday.

Step forward Brazil's Serie A, continuing despite the ongoing international window due to an athlete union agreement, with this column's spotlight falling specifically on Santos forward Marinho.

A player who can play through the middle or to the right of the attack, the 31-year-old looks a good price to be carded at 11/4.

Only one team has received more yellow cards than Santos in the current campaign, while the player himself has been carded in 10 of his 23 domestic starts this season. In Serie A alone, it's seven of 16, including six of the last 11.

With both his own personal form and that of the team having dipped in 2021, Marinho has cut a frustrated figure at times and that feeling could be compounded in this game, one which sees 16th-placed Santos head to the leaders, who boast the best defence in the league.

Marinho will doubtless try to unlock that home defence with his trickery which has seen him fouled 27 times in his last four games - is it any wonder he's known to retaliate? Indeed, the Brazilian has conceded 13 fouls himself in those four matches.

Referee Paulo Roberto Alves could be better but still averages over four cards per game, while his previous match involving Santos was his joint busiest of the campaign with seven cards shown in total, three to Marinho's men.

Alves' presence certainly isn't enough to put me off what looks a tempting price on a fairly quiet footballing day.
