Will Mbappé snub cost Real Madrid?
You have to cast your mind all the way back to Rafa Benitez and Valencia in 2003-04 to find LaLiga’s last title winner outside of the typical big three sides of Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Truthfully, as the market suggests, it will be the same three sides battling it out come the end of the season, with reigning champions Real Madrid the favourties to retain their title.
Managed by Italian supreme Carlo Ancelotti – the only manager ever to win each of Europe’s big five leagues, they may prove too difficult to knock of their perch. Xavi’s Barcelona still seem somewhat in the middle of a finding a new identity, with their off the field finances once again taking centre stage despite their signings, whilst Diego Simeone’s Atléti will surely prove their stubborn selves once more, and have won the division more recently than Barca (in 2020-21).
Sevilla, who just came up short after running the big three close for almost the full campaign will fight hard again for the top four, along with their closest rivals Real Betis and Unai Emery’s Villareal.
