With their dreams of 10-in-a-row lying in tatters, the rebuilding process begins for managerless Celtic.
The Hoops parted company with former boss Neil Lennon following an embarrassing defeat to Ross County that left Celtic miles behind league leaders Rangers. With Steven Gerrard's side surging to a 55th league title and first since 2011 the pressure is mounting on the board at Parkhead to get their next appointment right.
As is the case when any major UK club parts company with their manager the focus of supporters and football bettors turns to his replacement. The current next Celtic manager betting at Betfair is a mix of club legends, ambitious appointments, and risks.
Let's look at some of the names in the frame...
John Kennedy - Knows the club
Kenny worked alongside Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon, playing his part in their dominance of Scottish football. He helped steer the club under two different bosses to a famous quadruple treble and it could be argued he's best placed to start a summer clear out.
Kennedy knows the players, is in touch with the dressing room, understands the expectations of fans and is aware of what it takes to be successful at Celtic. The 37-year-old Scot made 28 appearances for the Bhoys between 1999 and 2009, scoring one goal. He was also capped by Scotland in 2004.
Kennedy has never managed a team full time but that proved no stumbling block for Gerrard across the city. If he wants the job he'll certainly be given the time of day by the board. If he can steer Celtic on a good run of form between now and the end of the season, including the two games to come against Rangers, he has a chance. The current betting on the Betfair Sportsbook has Kennedy for the next Celtic manager as a 4/1 second favourite.
Eddie Howe - The people's choice
Eddie Howe would be a popular appointment with fans and would show the Celtic board are planning for the club's long term future. The 43-year-old Englishman featured mostly for Bournemouth during his playing career and managed the Cherries on two occasions. His first stint was between 2008 and 2011 with the second 2012 to 2020.
Howe is a name that was been linked with the Parkhead position for some time now, even before Lennon was sacked, and it's little surprise to see him near the head of the betting. As the boss of Bournemouth, he led them from the lower levels to the Premier League, including a Championship title win in 2015.
It ended on a sour note, however, with Bournemouth relegated from the top flight in the summer after winning just nine of 38 games. Howe is 10/3 favourite to be the next Celtic manager.
Sean Dyche - A non-runner
Another with English Premier League experience in the list is Sean Dyche who is the third favourite at present. The 49-year-old is vastly more experienced as a player and first-team manager than the two mentioned above. He was in charge at Watford for a brief spell between 2011 and 2012 before taking over as Burnley manager.
The main stumbling block to Dyche being Celtic boss is the fact he's still employed by The Clarets. They aren't doing too well, granted, but would a manger of any Premier League club consider a move to Scotland? It's unlikely. Another negative is Dyche has done well with limited resources at Burnley and received the praise he deserves. He wouldn't be allowed to just simply do well at Celtic. In Glasgow, a draw is a disaster.
There seem to be too many question marks hanging over Dyche and he doesn't look great value at the 4/1 being offered. It may be worth looking past Sean for a more realistic name at a better price.
Steve Clarke - The history maker
The current Scotland boss took Kilmarnock into the Europa League and Scotland into the European Championships, something that hadn't been done for a generation. Could leading Celtic back to the group stages of the Champions League be his next trick?
For that to be the case the Hoops will have to wait until the rearranged Euro 2020 Championship this summer, a tournament that takes place just weeks before Celtic enter the qualifying round of Europe. It would also be a distraction for Clarke as he bids to make history by taking the Tartan Army into the knockout stages for the first time.
He has already knocked back the Rangers job. Will life at Celtic tempt him? It's possible at odds of 5/1 and that looks a generous call, but Celtic may be unwilling to wait.
Frank Lampard - Chance to face Gerrard
There has been much talk in the Scottish media of Lampard following Gerrard to Scotland. That would certainly add a little extra spice to next season's Old Firm matches and would bring more exposure to the Premiership.
Is Lampard a runner for the Celtic job? There's no reason why not but, unlike Gerrard, Frank has vital managerial experience having led Chelsea to a top-four finish in the Premier League and on a decent run of form in the Champions League.
He lost his job at Stamford Bridge earlier this season after spending big in the transfer window but slipped out of the top-four. It's likely Lampard has a successful managerial career ahead of him and may see a move to Scottish football as a step down the ladder. Far-fetched but at odds of 5/1 there may be something in it.
