Liverpool have today announced the shock sacking of Arne Slot with reports suggesting Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate for the job...

Liverpool sack Arne Slot

Arne Slot has today been sacked by Liverpool, and has become the first title-winning manager to be sacked by the club in the modern era.

The Dutchman has been dismissed after just two seasons in charge despite winning the Premier League title in 2025.

Slot's position as head coach came under scrutiny at various points during last season, most notably because of his public fall-out with Mo Salah and his team's poor title defence, though after securing Champions League football it was expected he would be given at least one more season in charge.

In a club statement, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) said it was a tough decision to sack Slot following a "significant, meaningful and - most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves - successful" tenure.

But it went on to say that after a review of last season, in which Liverpool failed to win a trophy, "The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team's trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction."

In the modern era, former Liverpool title-winner managers - Joe Fagan, Kenny Dalglish and Jurgen Klopp - all either retired or left the club by mutual consent.

Is Andoni Iraola set to take Anfield job?

The Betfair Sportsbook immediately suspended betting on who will be Liverpool's manager for the start of the 2026/27 season following the news of Slot's sacking, with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola expected to take over.

Betfair spokesperson James Mackie said: "The appointment of reported long-time target Andoni Iraola at Liverpool may be edging closer as betting has been suspended on the 43-year-old to replace Arne Slot at Anfield after Slot's exit was confirmed on Saturday. This comes after a flurry of bets with Iraola having previously been 1/51.20  to take charge."

Iraola's stock his risen massively after guiding the Cherries to a sixth-place finish last season, meaning the club will be playing Europa League football next term.

Iraola has been linked to numerous jobs since the season concluded, including Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, while it has been reported that Europa Conference League winners Crystal Palace were also keen to lure him to Selhurst Park.

But it appears that the Liverpool job is the one that will appeal most to the 43-year-old Spaniard, with some reports suggesting talks between the two parties may have already commenced.

Liverpool can be backed at 6/17.00 to regain their Premier League crown next season.
