Arsenal's danger zone

History, the data, and Matchday 33 all point to one thing: this is Arsenal's danger zone.

As Arsenal prepare to travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City in what could prove to be a defining moment in this season's Premier League title race, Betfair Exchange data reveals an uncomfortable truth for Gunners fans... They've been here before, and it hasn't ended well.

At the end of March, the Betfair Exchange had them at 1/101.10, a 90% implied probability, to win the Premier League, their strongest position across four consecutive title challenges.

Then came the 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth. Arsenal have since drifted to 8/111.73 (58%), while Manchester City have shortened from 9/110.00 (10%) in March to 11/82.38 (42%). The title race that looked all but over is suddenly wide open.

A spring curse pattern emerges

Betfair Exchange data from Arsenal's recent title challenges reveals a consistent trend, spring is when their campaigns have come unstuck:

- 2022/23: Arsenal became title favourites in January and reached a 66% implied probability in March. By 10 April, the odds had flipped back to Man City. Final result: second place.

- 2023/24: The Gunners hit 42% on 14 April, Matchday 33, before the Villa defeat saw them collapse to 27% the same day. Man City surged from 40% to 56% in 24 hours. Final result: second place.

- 2024/25: Arsenal were early favourites at 47% in late September, but Liverpool's dominance saw them fade. Final result: second place.

In each of the last three seasons, Arsenal have held title favouritism at some stage. In each case, they have finished behind the eventual champions.

The Matchday 33 Factor

The timing of Sunday's clash adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.

In 2023/24, Arsenal lost their status as title favourites on Matchday 33, following a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa. The odds flipped to Manchester City that same day, and Pep Guardiola's side went on to claim the trophy.

This weekend's trip to the Etihad falls on Matchday 33.

The similarities are hard to ignore: a crucial match with the title race hanging in the balance, and Manchester City waiting to capitalise on any slip.

On Sunday, Man City are 17/201.85 favourites on the Betfair Sportsbook to win the game. The Gunners can be backed at 10/34.33 with the Draw available at 14/53.80.

Victory for Guardiola's side would cut the gap at the top to three points and could trigger another dramatic shift in the betting markets, just as it did in 2023 and 2024.

Betfair Spokesperson, Sam Rosbottom said: "For Arsenal, the equation is simple: win on Sunday and silence the doubters, or risk watching history repeat itself.

"The Bournemouth defeat has reopened old wounds for the Gunners, and the timing couldn't be more significant, Matchday 33 was the exact point two seasons ago when the odds flipped against them and City went on to pip them to the title.

"What makes this season's wobble particularly alarming is the scale of the collapse. Arsenal's drop from 1/101.10, a 90% implied probability to their current position of 8/111.73 (58%) represents the most dramatic swing across all four of their recent title challenges. They have never been in a stronger position, and they have never fallen so far, so fast."
