Arsenal v Coventry - Summer signing backed

The Sky Blues could not have been handed a tougher test for their first top-flight game for 25 years: the Emirates, to face the reigning champions who, moreover, looked in formidably good shape at the weekend.

The Gunners' last 40 minutes against Manchester City was purely a physical work-out. They were three goals up and home and dry.

It gets worse for Frank Lampard's men too, because the last promoted team to win their first Premier League away fixture was Norwich six years ago. Since then there has been 17 losses and three draws, to an aggregate scoreline of 15-54.

Christos Tzolis was particularly impressive vs City, assisting twice to add to his 29 assists for Club Brugge last term. He scored 22 for good measure.

Four out of United's last five opening day commitments have finished 1-0 (two for, two against) and - should it be in their favour - they would be delighted with a similar outcome here in what is a deceptively challenging curtain-raiser.

Hull will be physical - averaging 11.2 fouls per 90 last term - and highly motivated amidst a packed MKM Stadium.

Ultimately you would expect the visitor's superior quality to tell up front, especially with Bryan Mbeumo impressing pre-season. The 27-year-old has also scored in two of his last three opening day fixtures.

United needn't be overly concerned about Hull's offensive attributes either. Last season, they took on the fifth fewest number of shots in the Championship.

Everton v Crystal Palace - Eagles to start brightly

Both teams endured a dramatic drop-off at the tail-end of last season, each failing to muster a win in their last seven. At least Palace had the excuse of being distracted by their European run.

With these clubs swapping Brennan Johnson and Dwight McNeil this summer we can expect one of them to score, because that's how football works, and of the two it's McNeil most fancied, given Everton's track record on opening weekends. They have lost their last four curtain-raisers, all to nil.

Palace to win to nil is a shout at 5/16.00

That though would go against this fixture's recent history, their last five meetings ending with both teams scoring. The safer bet then focuses on a team tipped to start brightly under new boss Pierre Sage gaining an early advantage over an Everton side who have kept just three clean sheets in 2026.

Ipswich v Sunderland - Drama after the break

The Mackems did exceptionally well last season to secure a seventh place finish but pertinently they scored only 13 first-half goals. That's the same number as Wolves who had a disastrous campaign. That's fewer than Burnley or West Ham who dropped.

With a fairly stingy defence to compensate, that resulted in them drawing 47.3% of their first-halves, so there is definite value in backing the draw at half-time at 11/102.11

However, with the promoted Tractor Boys scoring 59% of their Championship goals in the second period last term there is a bet with the same odds that appeals a little bit more.

Brentford v Tottenham - First point on the board

The Bees received a league-high 10 penalties in 2025/26, scoring eight of them.

Backing a spot-kick to be awarded at the Gtech offers up 7/52.40

As regards to the bigger picture, backing the draw makes sense, what with five of Brentford's last six at home last term finishing honours even, and this exact fixture doing likewise on New Year's Day.

As for Roberto de Zerbi and his influx of decent-looking new signings they will gladly take a point and consider it something to build on.

Spurs are one of only three top-flight sides to navigate pre-season undefeated.

Man City v Bournemouth - Haaland a near-cert

Was City's disappointing Community Shield performance down to temporary glitches and inferior fitness? Or did it foreshadow a period of struggle in the post-Guardiola era?

And what about the Cherries under Marco Rose? Can they continue to over-achieve, or will gravity take hold?
There are too many unknowns surrounding these sides at present but one thing is nigh-on certain, and that is Erling Haaland will be in his element.

The Striking Viking's opening day track record is something to behold, scoring twice, once, twice, twice, twice, twice and a hat-trick in his seven campaigns in England and Germany.

Indeed, if you add up his first five league games of each of these seasons, he has bagged an astonishing 52 goals in 35 games.

It's fair to suggest that he starts seasons well.

Newcastle v Liverpool - 9/2 treble

The Magpies last beat Liverpool in the league way back in 2015 and, frankly, with Gordon, Guimaraes, and Tonali all gone, and Joelinton injured, their predicted line-up doesn't strongly suggest that's going to change here.

What the hosts can at least contribute towards is something of a goal-fest, this fixture regularly providing a glut of them. Their last six meetings has produced 4.5 per 90.

Florian Wirtz has shone in moments pre-season.
