Whatever rhetoric Alex McLeish chooses to employ, one win in 13 tells its own sorry story and Villa are now just three points from Bolton, who also have a game in hand.
After overseeing Birmingham's relegation last season, McLeish was always likely to face an uphill struggle to get the fans on side, and Villa's slump continues to provide his detractors with plenty of ammunition.
After watching his side slip to a fourth defeat in seven, McLeish came under fire from the stands once more, as the possibility of Villa falling out of the Premier League for the first time becomes an ever-increasing possibility.
But the Scot has vowed to fight on and claims to have the support of Randy Lerner, although Villa's hierarchy are pretty much stuck with their man at this late stage. Unless that is, they adopt Barnet's approach, who recently replaced Lawrie Sanchez with only four games to play.
Villa have just three games to save themselves, but thanks to their superior goal difference, perhaps need just one more win. Their remaining fixtures, however, suggest three points aren't likely to come easily.
First up, Villa face a midlands derby at the Hawthorns, against a West Brom side who have won three of their previous four league outings. The visitors are 3.711/4 to secure their first away win since a 3-2 success at Molineux in January.
Mcleish's side then entertain Tottenham at Villa Park, before finishing the campaign with a difficult trip to Norwich. Even if the latter have nothing to play for, Harry Redknapp's side will almost certainly require victory to revive their ailing hopes of Champions League football.
And on current form, there's every chance Villa won't win another game between now and the end of the season. As it stands, they are 7.26/1 to be relegated.
As for Bolton, last night's victory was their seventh against the Premier League's bottom-six clubs, but their record against the other 14 teams is dismal. Owen Coyle's side have lost 19, drawn two and won just three against everyone else.
Worryingly for the Trotters, none of their final four matches pit them against their fellow strugglers, with Sunderland, West Brom, Stoke and Spurs still to play. Despite being just a point from safety, Bolton are still 2.568/5 to go down.
