Fifth meeting for familiar foes

It's deja vu all over again. Again. Once more.

I think that makes five as this is the fifth time these increasingly familar foes have lined up this season. Who knows, we may yet see them lock horns in the Champions League.

For the record, here are the head-to-heads so far:

Nov 22: Newcastle 2-1 Man City (Premier League)
Jan 13: Newcastle 0-2 Man City (Carabao Cup semi, 1st leg)
Feb 04: Man City 3-1 Newcastle (Carabao Cup, semi, 2nd leg)
Feb 21: Man City 2-1 Newcastle (Premier League)

That's three wins to City and one for Newcastle, with an 8-4 goal count in favour of Pep's men.

Newcastle will be hoping to make it a Manchester double this week after scoring a dramatic 2-1 win over United on Wednesday night despite playing the whole of the second half with 10 men after Jacob Ramsey's harsh sending off.

That's now five wins out of seven for Newcastle in all competitions while they've scored in each of their last 11 matches.

City hoping to bounce back from Forest blow

While Newcastle were celebrating William Osula's brilliant, curling last-gasp winner, City fans were trudging out of the Etihad after being held 2-2 by Nottingham Forest.

City played well and created plenty but Forest produced two moments of class to grab a draw and leave Pep's men seven points behind Arsenal at the top of the table.

That draw ended City's run of six straight victories, and overall since losing 3-1 to big-name Champions League slayers Bodo Glimt in January, they've won eight and drawn two of their last 10 games.

After three straight victories over Newcastle, City will hope to get back to winning ways although they haven't always found it easy at St James' Park.

City hot favourites but home advantage key

In the match betting, Man City are 21/202.05 to beat the Magpies for a fourth time in a row. Newcastle are 23/103.30 while The Draw is 27/103.70.

It would be hard to oppose City if this were being played at the Etihad even though Newcastle gave them a really good game there last time (2-1).

But at St. James' Park it could be very different. Newcastle have already beaten them there this season while the last six meetings on Tyneside in all comps show two wins each and a pair of draws.

Contrast that with the last six games at the Etihad where City have won all of them.

Also of note is that, after ending Michael Carrick's unbeaten start at Man Utd, the Magpies have only lost two of their last 21 home evening kick-offs (7pm or later) in the Premier League (W12 D7). Atmosphere is a big factor under the bright lights at St James' Park.

Another angle here is the fixture list.

Both teams have mega-ties against Spanish giants in the Champions League next week. Newcastle host Barcelona for what will be their fifth straight home game while City travel to Real Madrid.

Pep's brain will be working overtime for the Madrid away tie and perhaps City could just drop their guard more than a Newcastle side sure to be pumped up for the task in hand by the vociferous crowd.

In other words, I think Newcastle are worth a bet at 23/103.30.

Although City are unbeaten in their last three away games, they haven't been convincing. They only drew 2-2 at Spurs, trailed Liverpool with six minutes left before preying on the hosts' vulnerabilities late in games and then were somewhat fortunate to win at Leeds.

Gordon can strike again

Anthony Gordon now has 15 goals this season which may surprise some.

Taking penalties - and taking them well - has bumped up his tally but he's also been scoring from open play.

With his pace, he's a dangerous customer for this City side who can let players run at them and Gordon loves a gallop from deep.

In short, there are several routes to a Gordon goal and he's worth a look to score at 21/103.10.

For a Bet Builder, Gordon to score in a Newcastle win is around 11/26.50 and that definitely has some appeal.

A 1pt stake on all three recommended bets returns a profit if any land and obviously it's a full house if the BB comes in.

For City, Antoine Semenyo rates a better anytime bet at 9/52.80 than Erling Haaland at 5/61.84 right now.

Semenyo has scored in seven of his 12 games since joining in the transfer window. Haaland has managed just three goals in his last dozen matches.

Finally, it's worth pointing out that if you do fancy the Magpies here, now is the time to back Newcastle to win the FA Cup at 15.014/1 on the Betfair Exchange.

That price will obviously crash if they dump City out and there are plenty of favourable draws that could await in the last eight. Carabao Cup last season, FA Cup this?
