Ronaldo made his name at Sporting Clube de Portugal after signing from Nacional. The 17-year-old midfielder made his league debut for the Portuguese club in October 2002, scoring twice. He went on to score five goals in 31 appearances for Sporting, before signing for Manchester United in the summer of 2003. Ronaldo became United's first ever Portuguese signing for a fee of €15million.

He made his debut against Bolton Wanderers, wearing the famous number seven shirt which had been worn by the likes of Eric Cantona and David Beckham before him. Ronaldo ended his first season in English football by scoring in Manchester United's 3-0 FA Cup final win against Millwall.

The following season, Ronaldo scored 10 goals in all competitions, including one in United's 4-0 League Cup final victory over Wigan Athletic. In the 2006/2007 campaign, Ronaldo netted 23 goals in 53 appearances. The Portuguese attacker won multiple 'player of the year' awards as well as collecting his first Premier League winners' medal.

Ronaldo finished runner-up to AC Milan's Kaka in the 2007 Ballon d'Or, before winning the prestigious award in 2008. He lifted two more Premier League trophies in 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, as well as winning the Champions League for the first time in his career in the latter campaign, scoring in the final against Chelsea. Ronaldo found the net 68 times in his last two years at Manchester United.

Having been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid for at least the last two seasons, Ronaldo finally made the move to the Spanish capital in the summer of 2009 for a world record fee of £80million - a figure that has only been topped once since (Gareth Bale, £85million).

Ronaldo scored on his La Liga debut with a penalty kick against Deportivo La Coruna. He went on to score 33 goals in his first season, following that up with 53 strikes in all competitions in 2010/2011, helping his team to win the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid beat Barcelona to the La Liga title the year after that, with their talisman scoring 46 times in 38 games; he bagged 60 goals in all competitions, his best goal-scoring tally in a season to date. Ronaldo and Real are trophy-less since 2012.

For his country, Ronaldo has never won a major competition. Portugal finished runners-up in Euro 2004, which they hosted. Now at the age of 28, Ronaldo has made over 100 international appearances, and is currently captain of his country.

Cristiano Ronaldo is renowned as of the greatest players in the history of the game. His individual honours include winning the PFA Players' Player of the Year and PFA Fans' Player of the Year twice, the FWA Player of the Year twice and the Ballon d'Or. Ronaldo has also been named in the UEFA Team of the Year for the last six years.
