Tuesday's Championship tips

Bristol City vs Blackburn - BTTS at Ashton Gate

Tuesday, 19:45

Bristol City's form at Ashton Gate has been fairly inconsistent, with a W4, L4 record across their last eight games here. The Robins did manage to pick up a point at the weekend in a fairly even game at the Valley, and it's difficult to fully assess Michael Skubala's side just yet. Their two home wins have come against bottom-half opposition, and they'll be confident they can add to their tally on Tuesday night.

Skubala will be keen to assess his side, with several players coming back from injury or carrying knocks. He may opt to rotate his XI during this busy period to avoid any further issues.

Blackburn are yet to record a victory on the road, although they have drawn three of their four away matches. They are now unbeaten in three games and are looking far sharper going forward. They should be able to play their part in an entertaining contest.

Burnley vs Charlton - Burnley to build on their weekend success

Click for Burnley vs Charlton odds
Tuesday, 19:45

Burnley finally got off the mark with a comprehensive victory against Watford at Vicarage Road. The Clarets have endured a terrible start to the season, but they thoroughly deserved their success on Saturday with an xG of 1.84 and 36 touches in the opposition's box.

Nicky Hayen's side will be desperate to record a victory at Turf Moor this week, to avoid the unwanted record of going a whole calendar year without a home win. This feels like a good opportunity to banish some of those negative stats.

Charlton are fairly strong at home, but they tend to struggle on the road. Nathan Jones' side have already been defeated at Stoke and Cardiff, and their unexpected success at West Ham feels like a lifetime ago. They may be coming up against Burnley at just the wrong time.

Cardiff vs Watford - BBM's men to bounce back

Tuesday, 19:45

Watford's horrible run of form continued at the weekend with a heavy defeat at home to Burnley. It's now five defeats from their last six outings and an inevitable managerial change doesn't feel too far away. Their away form has been horrendous and they have failed to find the net on the road since August 22nd.

They've netted just seven times all season, and there is a lack of a cohesive plan going forward.

Cardiff were defeated at Ewood Park at the weekend, continuing their poor run of form outside of South Wales. They've been far more effective at the Cardiff City Stadium, where they are still unbeaten. They beat Charlton last time out, and should have beaten Stoke at the beginning of September.

Watford have a good record in this fixture, but I believe that this will continue on Tuesday night.

Millwall vs Swansea - Another thriller at the Den

Click for Millwall vs Swansea odds
Tuesday, 19:45

Millwall edged out PNE at the weekend, snapping their three-match winless run. Their home games have been far more entertaining than their performances on the road, and they have averaged 2.25 goals per game here. The Lions still have plenty of injury issues, and they are missing the physicality of Josh Coburn up front and the control of Casper de Norre in the centre of the park.

De Norre's absence has resulted in the defence becoming a little exposed against better sides, and Swansea certainly fall into that category. The visitors managed to stay top of the table with a comeback victory against Norwich on Saturday, and all of their matches on the road have featured at least three goals. They've come from behind to beat Stoke and Lincoln already this season, showing tremendous spirit and grit.

They should have enough quality to get involved in a lively affair.

Wolves vs Bolton - Mesmerising night at Molineux

Click for Wolves vs Bolton odds
Tuesday, 19:45

Wolves were narrowly beaten at the Riverside on Saturday afternoon, falling to their first defeat in over a month. It was a tight game, in which the men from the Black Country simply struggled to break down a well-organised and balanced Middlesbrough outfit.

At home, they have been far more effective, with an xG of 1.81 and their games have averaged 3.33 goals per game. Mateus Mane has looked dangerous on the left, and they may decide to deploy the impressive Jordan James from the start here.

Bolton will be extremely disappointed by Saturday's loss at home to Stoke. The Trotters were handed an advantage when the visitors were reduced to ten men, but they could not break them down and ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.

We know that they can score goals on the road, having recently beaten Norwich 4-3, and they should play their part in another entertaining 90 minutes here.

Wrexham vs West Brom - Cagey contest in North Wales

Click for Wrexham vs West Brom odds
Tuesday, 19:45

It's not easy to assess Wrexham. They've produced some decent performances, picking up notable victories against Millwall and Southampton, yet they've dropped points in several winnable contests, and have looked laboured at times. They've failed to beat Watford, Birmingham and Burnley here, and they have become a little difficult to trust.

They were fractionally better than Derby at the weekend, taking 13 shots, but they were forced to wait until the 88th minute to equalise. Callum O'Hare and Kieffer Moore combined effectively, but they still haven't found the right balance in midfield.

West Brom have now slumped to back-to-back 1-0 defeats and they have failed to create anything of note in both matches. This is the biggest challenge of James Morrison's fledgling managerial career, and many rookie bosses have struggled to turn things around at this level when the going gets tough.

They may not be firing in the final third, but they aren't giving much away either. This could be close.

Birmingham vs Preston - Another away day defeat for struggling PNE

Click for Birmingham vs PNE odds
Tuesday, 20:00

Birmingham have managed to remain unbeaten in eight of their opening nine matches, yet they're still waiting for their first victory at St. Andrews this season. They've won each of their last two matches, and were very good value for their 2-2 draw here with Middlesbrough. That elusive home victory cannot be too far away.

This could be the perfect game for Chris Davies' men, with out-of-form Preston arriving in the West Midlands for this midweek matchup.

The appointment of Graham Alexander failed to ignite a change of their fortunes on Saturday and the enormity of the task facing the former full-back is likely to hit home over the coming days.

They have an xGA of 1.96 on their travels so far and have conceded 2+ goals in three of their four matches away from Deepdale. Their squad lacks quality this season and they aren't offering enough going forward.

Stoke vs Middlesbrough - Another entertaining tie involving the Potters

Click for Stoke vs Middlesbrough odds
Tuesday, 20:00

Stoke are on a sensational run of form. They have climbed into the top half of the table, by winning five of their last six, and they held out impressively for a 2-1 victory over Bolton at the weekend, despite being reduced to ten men in the first half. Mark Robins' teams can often be tough to stop when they get on a roll, and the former Coventry boss does have a fairly good record against Boro, winning nine of his 21 meetings with the Teessiders.

Nevertheless, there is a feel-good factor around Middlesbrough, and they always looked in control at the weekend against Wolves. Tommy Conway put in a superb performance, leading the line alongside the decisive Will Lankshear, and they shouldn't have too much trouble finding a way past the Stoke back line.

BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals have landed in three of the last four stagings of this fixture in Staffordshire, and I expect that trend to continue here.

Wednesday's Championship tips

Norwich vs Southampton - Barmy 90 minutes in East Anglia

Click for Norwich vs Southampton odds
Wednesday, 19:45

Norwich's defence continues to leak. The Canaries capitalised on a mistake to take the lead at Swansea, but they were unable to increase that advantage, and ended up losing 2-1. It's ten goals conceded in three matches for Philippe Clement's side, who need to get back to winning ways here. They are usually reliable at Carrow Road, but they were incredibly sloppy against Bolton before the international break, and they could find it tough to thwart Southampton on Wednesday night.

The Saints are hard to trust on the road. Notwithstanding Norwich's erratic form, I wouldn't be comfortable backing Tonda Ecket's men away from St Mary's. They concede too many goals on their travels, and are yet to keep a clean sheet.

This could escalate.

QPR vs Derby - Low-scoring contest at Loftus Road

Click for QPR vs Derby odds
Wednesday, 19:45

QPR's unbeaten record remained intact courtesy of Pierce Charles' heroics in the final minute of Friday's fixture at West Ham. The R's will benefit from an extra day's rest, and they are fancied to take three points from this contest.

The West Londoners are not easy to breach, conceding an average of just 0.89 goals per game. They are well-organised and work hard, although they haven't been firing on all cylinders in the final third recently.

Derby are slowly heading in the right direction, collecting back-to-back draws against decent opposition. They still lack cohesiveness going forward, but John Eustace's side do appear to have turned a corner when it comes to their defensive performance.

With just three goals in their last five outings, they may find it tough to find a way past the home defence.

Portsmouth vs Sheffield United - Riveting contest at Fratton Park

Click for Portsmouth vs Sheffield United odds
Wednesday, 19:45

Pompey have still only won once at Fratton Park this season, yet they've created plenty of opportunities and produced decent numbers in front of their own fans. They've notched four times in their last two, and were extremely unlucky to draw a blank against Derby, having racked up 1.99 xG throughout the 90 minutes.

Sheffield United beat Lincoln 3-0 at the weekend, despite firing in fewer shots than the Imps. The Blades were decisive when it mattered and delivered a wonderful second-half display, helped by a tactical reshuffle, which involved switching wingers. They have an xGA of 1.82 away from home, suggesting that they're still giving plenty of chances away, yet with their newfound confidence, they should be able to get on the scoresheet and play their part in a watchable game.

Lincoln vs West Ham - Hammers to extend their unbeaten away sequence

Click for Lincoln vs WHU odds
Wednesday, 20:00

Lincoln are yet to win at Sincil Bank this season, and they come here off the back of consecutive defeats. The Imps' tactics have seemingly been far more effective on the road, and this could be a tough 90 minutes for the recently promoted outfit.

Scoring goals is looking like it could be an issue this year, with last season's League One champions having failed to score more than a single goal in a game so far. They don't tend to concede many, although hosting West Ham could be their toughest test yet.

The Hammers could only draw 1-1 on Friday evening with a stubborn QPR outfit. Nuno's side are unbeaten on the road, although they are yet to keep a clean sheet away from the London Stadium. I think there is the potential to cut loose and have some fun here.
