Top meets bottom in tight group

The Group D leaders Sporting Lisbon will be looking for revenge when they host Marseille on Wednesday night.

In the reverse fixture a week ago, Marseille ran out as 4-1 winners. Yet it was actually Sporting that took the lead through Trincao in the first minute of a game that quickly exploded into life. Marseille recovered and were 2-1 up by the 16th minute and then took full advantage when Sporting had Adan sent off in the 23rd.

Had Sporting kept 11 players on the pitch, they may well have added at least another point to their tally of six. They had previously beaten both Eintracht Frankfurt and Spurs. Though they remain top of this tight group, they are only three points ahead of a Marseille side that are still bottom.

Though Sporting are faring well in Europe, they are only fifth in the Primeira Liga, after their 2-1 win at Santa Clara over the weekend. Marseille have been pushing PSG in Ligue 1, but suffered their first domestic defeat on Saturday, when they lost 2-1 at home to Ajaccio, which saw them slip down to third.

Goals should flow again

Sporting Lisbon are the 2.226/5 favourites, with Marseille at 3.4549/20 and the draw at 3.6553/20.

It may seem a short price for Sporting considering the result last week, but the early sending off definitely played a huge part in them being so soundly beaten by Marseille. That said, their domestic form is inconsistent, so the odds should probably be a bit closer, even if Sporting are the rightful favourites here.

If the result is difficult to predict, it would at least seem likely that this game will feature plenty of goals. Marseille have reason to be confident and need a win to recover lost ground after losing their first two games in the group. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals is 1.910/11.
