Founded in 1900 by a group of 11 players led by Franz John, Bayern Munich, or FC Bayern, is a German football club based in Munich, playing its home games at the Allianz Arena. After spending 33 years with Munich's Olympiastadion as their home, Bayern moved into the Allianz Arena, which they share with city rivals 1860 Munich.

The club compete in the Bundesliga, the top league in German football, which they joined in 1963 despite winning their first national championship title in 31 years earlier in 1932, going on to win the league 22 times since joining. Bayern are Germany's most successful club, winning 23 league titles and 16 Cup titles.
As well as their illustrious domestic record, Bayern have also reached ten European Cup/UEFA Champions League finals, most recently winning their fifth title in 2013 during their majestic treble-winning season. The club have also won one UEFA Cup, one European Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup and two Intercontinental Cups, establishing themselves as one of European football's most successful clubs, and regularly featuring in the latter stages of the Champions League.
The club enjoyed their most successful period during the 1970s, when club legend Franz Beckenbauer led Bayern to four league titles and three back-to-back European Cup crowns under his captaincy. Beckenbaur made over 420 appearances for Bayern over the course of a 13-year spell with the club, during which time he also racked up over 100 caps for West Germany and captained the team to World Cup glory in 1974.
As well as long-term rivals 1860 Munich and FC Nuremberg, Bayern have also established a modern-day rivalry with Borussia Dortmund, with the two clubs the current dominant powers in German football, regularly battling it out for league and Cup honours.
As successful off the football pitch as they are on it, Bayern Munich are the biggest sports club in Germany and the fourth biggest football club in the world, generating over £300 million in 2012 whilst racking up a global membership of over 223,500. Bayern are the second-biggest football club in the world in terms of membership, second behind Portuguese giants Benfica.
Currently managed by former Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola, Bayern are expected to begin a new era of dominance in German football, and the club have also been tipped to build on their 2013 Champions League success by challenging the likes of Barcelona to be Europe's number one club side.
