To celebrate the NFL returning to Wembley on Sunday 26th October, Betfair has gone to town and splashed out on its very own cheerleading squad... and as always with Betfair you get 20% more than you expected!
Yep, with Betfair you get 20% bigger odds so our cheerleaders are not the traditional stick-thin, all singing, all dancing variety - they are (at least) 20% bigger!
The Betfair Bruisers have been cruising the streets of London to drum up some support for the big game - and to highlight the fact that we'll be offering over 20 different markets when the New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers go head-to-head beneath the Wembley Arch.
So let's meet the team... (left to right):
Name: Ashley
Home Town: Nantucket
Favourite Team: Miami Dolphins
Game Prediction: New Orleans in the +3.5pts market
Famous for her short shorts, big thighs and apple pies, this blondosauras bombshell from Nantucket - the whaling capital of the US - graduated from the New School for Social Research before cutting her teeth as a White House intern. However, Ashley - named after the flame-haired heroin of Valley of the Dolls - soon decided that Washington wasn't for her and opted for a career as a mobile nail technician. She emphasises the importance of a rounded personality when she says: "I mean, football is great and all but you have to remember that there's more to life. I'm interested in lots of things, like fashion... and make-up."
Name: Beth
Home Town: New York
Favourite Team: Jets
Game Prediction: New Orleans / San Diego HT/FT market
Her first cheerleading experience was during a sleepover at her friend Jolene's house when she was just 8 years old. She got the bug (measles as it turned out) and the rest is history. After 'pumping the poms' at the Dipsville Springs High School in Upstate New York, she was 'shout' captain at the University of Mid-Carolina before joining the Betfair Bruisers this year. Beth campaigns for the rights of fork-lift truck drivers in her spare time.
Name: Brittany
Home Town: San Diego
Favourite Team: Chargers (of course!)
Game Prediction: San Diego to win by +12pts
More 'professor in a mini-skirt' than 'pig in lipstick', this Californian ingenue (that's a French word!) lists Edith Wharton among her heroines and describes Tony Soprano as her dream man, adding: "Come on, all women dream of being crushed, don't they?" More comfortable curled up at the back of the bus with a single malt and the latest Alice Munro than down the front playing gin rummy for twinkies, Brittany has become slightly unpopular with her less intellectually-athletic team-mates since she gifted them subscriptions to the New Feminist Review last Christmas.
Name: Chad
Home Town: San Francisco
Favourite Team: The 49ers
Game Prediction: Come on the Saints!
Chad is the only child of one of Hollywood's most powerful studio presidents and is described by his team-mates as "introverted." He wonders aloud: "Have you ever had Ben and Jerry's ice cream? I haven't but my life coach says it's really nice". Asked what he enjoys about cheerleading he answers: "It's like Woody Allen says: "the body never lies.""
Name: Debbie
Home Town: Baltimore
Favourite Team: Cowboys
Game Prediction: Chargers to win by 7-12pts
A latecomer to synchronised display, she left her native Baltimore to pursue a career as a Physical Education instructor in Dallas. But it was a case of been there, done that for Debbie who wanted to see the world instead. She's a mainstay of the Bruisers' squad and is in charge of team morale - as she often says: "you have to keep your pecker up to perform at this level."
Name: Todd
Home Town: Kansas City
Favourite Team: Chiefs
Game Prediction: Chargers to win by 7-12pts
Todd discovered cheerleading when his parents banished him to a mid-Western prep-school following a series of run-ins with the police back in his native Glasgow (that's Scotland, UK). The Bruisers have, he believes, offered him redemption: "Och aye," he says, "as a young 'un I didnae have nae respect for authority an that, an nae outlet for my considerable energies, but I'm more chilled oot noo. I nae longer feel persecuted by my own reflection - yer ken what I mean?"
