The late Chadwick Boseman is odds-on for Best Leading Actor

The late Chadwick Boseman is odds-on to win Best Leading actor and his co-star Viola Davis could be value too says Max Liu in his Oscars 2021 betting update...

"Viola Davis is 3.613/5 to win the Best Leading Actress Oscar and that might be value. Davis trails Carey Mulligan 2.47/5 while Frances McDormand 5.85/1 should also be in contention in a competitive field."

The late Chadwick Boseman is heavy odds-on on the Exchange to win a posthumous Best Leading Actor Oscar after he took the equivalent award at the Golden Globes last night.

The Globes, which can offer strong pointers for the Oscars, kicked off a delayed awards season in Hollywood.

There were big wins for Nomadland - the 1.625/8 favourite to take the Oscar for Best Picture - and the latest Borat film.

Nomadland isn't out in the UK yet but it looks set for a big night at the Oscars on 26 April as its director Chloe Zhao is 1/5 on the Sportsbook to win Best Director. Last night, Zhao became the first Asian woman to win the award at the Globes.

Boseman is 1.152/13 to win Best Leading actor which would see him follow in the footsteps of Heath Ledger who previously won a posthumous Oscar.

The actor, who died last year aged 43, won his Globe for his appearance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom - a film that's 13.012/1 to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Viola Davis is 3.613/5 to win the Best Leading Actress Oscar for her performance in the same film and that might be value.

Davis trails Carey Mulligan 2.47/5 while Frances McDormand 5.85/1 should also be in contention in a competitive field.

For Best Supporting Actor the odds shortened on Daniel Kaluuya 1.331/3 after he picked up the Globe for his role in Judas And The Black Messiah.

As mentioned, the Globes provide clues as to what we can expect from the Oscars. But the one does not always mirror the other and plenty of films, directors and actors have looked like shoo-ins post-Globes then lost out at the Oscars. So this year's awards are by no-means a foregone conclusion.

The Academy Award nominations are announced on 15 March and I'll be back with another look at the odds shortly afterwards.
